Victoria Barnett has it all.

A great career. A handsome and loving husband. A beautiful home in the suburbs and a plan to fill it with children. Life is perfect—or so it seems.

Then she’s in a terrible accident… and everything falls apart.

Now Victoria is unable to walk. She can’t feed or dress herself. She can’t even speak. She is confined to the top floor of her house with twenty-four-hour care.

Sylvia Robinson is hired by Victoria’s husband to help care for her. But it turns out Victoria isn’t as impaired as Sylvia was led to believe. There’s a story Victoria desperately wants to tell… if only she could get out the words.

Then Sylvia discovers Victoria’s diary hidden away in a drawer.

And what’s inside is shocking.

I am reading all Freida McFadden’s books and this is one of the books that I got my hands on.

The Wife Upstairs talks about this girl Sylvie who was unexpectedly given a job by a best selling author Adam–the job is look after his wife, the paralyzed Victoria. Sylvie readily accepts the job as she is in desperate need for money but she has to move into their almost mansion house located in the middle of nowhere. As Sylvie moves in, she comes across Victoria’s diary and starts reading it.

Victoria used to have it all–a perfect career as an ER nurse and of course her budding romance with handsome Adam. But as the relationship progressed, Victoria couldn’t help but realize that Adam isn’t picture perfect as he seemed. In fact, Adam is jealous, obsessive and controlling. As Sylvie reads her diary, the Adam she knew sounded different from what Victoria is saying. Did Sylvie make a right decision to accept the job? Is she in danger?

Like all her books, The Wife Upstairs is fast paced and page turning. That was the only thing. However, unlike some of her books, this was far too predictable. We already know who the villain is, we know what the ending is going to be (well mostly I did) so as a result, I didn’t really enjoy this book as much as I did with the others. The ending was too predictable and the twists were all predictable in my opinion as well. I could safely say that in my opinion, the Wife Upstairs might not really be her best–although it is a lot better than her recently released novel The Co-Worker, which by far in my opinion is her not best.

And this book also reminded me of Verity by Colleen Hoover–I may not be a fan of Colleen Hoover but Verity is by far my favorite Colleen Hoover novel. The plot line is exactly the same although the main protagonist’s stay in the house is the only difference. If you haven’t read the Verity, go ahead and read and then you can read this book.

Overall, this book is worth 3.5 stars.

The Last One At the Wedding – Book Review

Title:- The Last One At the Wedding

Author:- Jason Rekulak

Date published:- October 8th 2024

Genre:- Thriller

Rating:-

Plot:- 4/5 Writing:- 4/5

Overall rating:- 4/5

From the bestselling author of Hidden Pictures comes a breathtaking work of suspense about a father trying to save his daughter from a life-altering decision that will put everything he loves on the line.

Frank Szatowski is shocked when his daughter, Maggie, calls him for the first time in three years. He was convinced that their estrangement would become permanent. He’s even more surprised when she invites him to her upcoming wedding in New Hampshire. Frank is ecstatic, and determined to finally make things right.

He arrives to find that the wedding is at a private estate—very secluded, very luxurious, very much out of his league. It seems that Maggie failed to mention that she’s marrying Aidan Gardner, the son of a famous tech billionaire. Feeling desperately out of place, Frank focuses on reconnecting with Maggie and getting to know her new family. But it’s difficult: Aidan is withdrawn and evasive; Maggie doesn’t seem to have time for him; and he finds that the locals are disturbingly hostile to the Gardners. Frank needs to know more about this family his daughter is marrying into, but if he pushes too hard, he could lose Maggie forever.

An edge-of-your-seat thriller that delves deep into the heart of one family, The Last One at the Wedding is a work of brilliant suspense from a true modern master.

If you have not read Jason Rekulak’s debut book, The Hidden Pictures, you must grab your hand on the book before reading this one. Well, this book has nothing to do with the first book but then this book wasn’t great as the first book. With that being said, I am not saying this wasn’t great–it was in my opinion somewhat a good thriller. But a bit unreliastic.

Frank Szatowski is a dedicated and hardworking employee at the UPS having worked at UPS for over twenty years. He was also a former US army officer. Frank gets a surprise when his daughter, Maggie calls him unexpectedly. Maggie and Frank had been estranged for three years and so it was a bit of surprise and a shock to Frank when Maggie tells Frank that she is getting married to Aiden Gardner, who is the son of the wealthy tycoon and is inviting him and Frank’s sister Tammie for her wedding. The wedding will be held at none other than the Gardener’s own estate in New Hampshire, known as Osprey Cove.

As Frank is happy for his daughter, he couldn’t help but notice how distant his future-son-law Aiden is–not to mention how Aiden looks as if he keeps dark secrets to himself. Frank then receives an anonymous letter with a picture of a girl and Aiden together. The girl is Dawn Toggart who mysteriously went missing and was supposedly last seen with Aiden, although Aiden denied his involvement. As Frank goes to celebrate his daughter’s wedding, he couldn’t help but notice that the Gardener family is hiding secrets…

This was well written but then I feel the thrill wasn’t that great in the book. The story is told in Frank’s POV completely. There are some twists and turns in the story and the pacing of the story was moderate. However, the story gets more interesting towards the end of the book and the most unexpected ending is found at the end. However, it wasn’t as great as the Hidden Pictures, which kept me up all night and that it wasn’t that fast paced or page turning like the previous book. Nevertheless, it was a good thriller though–the plot was OK.

I do like the mention of estranged relationship with Frank and his daughter Maggie and the fact about Maggie which is revealed at the end. Frank is obviously a caring father while Maggie could be manipulative. Then we have sweet Abigail who is a sweetest child and Tammie who is oblivious about Maggie’s character.

Overall this book is worth four stars.

Sounds Like Love – Book Review

Title:- Sounds Like Love

Author:- Ashley Poston

A hitmaking songwriter and a bitter musician share a startling and inexplicable connection that they’ll do anything to shake, in the next sparkling, magical book from Ashley Poston.

Joni Lark is living the dream. She’s one of the most coveted songwriters in LA…and she can’t seem to write. There’s an emptiness inside her, and nothing seems to fill it.

When she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, North Carolina, she hopes that the sand, the surf, and the concerts at The Revelry, her family’s music venue, will spark her inspiration. But when she gets there, nothing is how she left it. Her best friend is avoiding her, her mother’s memories are fading fast, and The Revelry is closing.

How can she think about writing her next song when everything is changing without her?

Until she hears it. A melody in her head, lyric-less and half-formed, and an alluring and addictive voice to go with it—belonging, apparently, to a wry musician with hangups of his own.

Surely, he’s a figment of her overworked imagination.

But then the very real man attached to the voice shows up in Vienna Shores. He’s aggravating and gruff on the outside—nothing like the sweet, funny voice in Joni’s head—and he has a plan:

They’ll finish the song haunting them both, break their connection, and hope they don’t risk their hearts in the process.

Because that song stuck in their heads? Maybe it’s there for a reason.

Sounds Like Love is Ashley Poston’s latest novel. Seven Year Slip was my favorite of hers but I always make it a point to read all her latest novels (even though it is romance)

Joni Lark is one of the coveted song writers in LA but recently, Joni couldn’t write a single song. While attending Willa Gray’s concert, she meets a former boy band member, Sebastian. When the video cam focuses on them, Joni was supposed to kiss Sebastian. They kiss but then they go in separate ways. The next day, Joni goes back to her hometown in South Carolina. Her parents are running a successful restaurant/bar/theater. When her parents give a devastating news, Joni could a melody being hummed in her mind. Joni realizes that she can hear someone else’s thoughts and that someone else can also hear her thoughts. They meet and it was none other than Sebastian. Joni gets to know more about Sebastian and at the same time a love blossom between the two.

Ashley Poston always write romance books with a taste of magical realism in it. Each of her books seem to have a theme and in this case, the theme is music. Joni and Sebastian seem to be having a strong chemistry between them and Joni is a strong female lead in the story. I also liked the family dynamics mentioned in the story.

Although I didn’t like this book as much as I did with Seven Year Slip, nonetheless the story was funny with laugh out loud scenes and of course filled with music. Overall this is wth four stars.

The New Neighbors – Book Review

Title:- The New Neighbours

You know your neighbours are plotting a crime but no one believes you . . .

When Lena helps her teenage son gather sounds for his media studies project, she doesn’t expect her boom-microphone to pick up a conversation between her neighbours, the Morgans.

And she’s certain they are planning a crime.

Her family and friends tell her that she must have misheard. After all, the Morgans are a well-respected, upstanding couple in their early sixties. They’ve never been in trouble with the law.

Yet Lena can’t stop thinking about it. Because what if she hasn’t misheard? What if she can prevent something awful happening?

After all, stopping it could help ease her conscience about her own dark past . . .

The New Neighbours is Claire Douglas’s latest book.

In this book, Lena gets new neighbors–an older couple named Marielle and Henry. They both looked decent–Marielle used to be a professor at a university while Henry was a doctor. Lena’s son, Rufus was doing a college project with a boom set. So when Lena tries to take the boom set, she accidentally hears her neighbors talking–about getting rid of someone. Now Lena gets obsessed of finding out what her neighbors are up to even though it may even open a dark past that Lena wants to forget about.

The story is entirely told in the POV of Lena, Henry and a woman named Natalie, although Natalie’s POV is less. There is also a time shift when Henry met Marielle in the 80’s, young Lena working as a midwife in a hospital in late 90’s and getting embroiled in a case. The pacing of the story is overall fast and the reader gets curious about what Lena’s neighbors are really up to.

Not only this story talks about the neighbors–we also see the fact that Lena is trying to get along with the loneliness–being alone in the house as she is separated from Charlie and her son Rufus will be off to college soon. And because of her loneliness, soon she gets involved in the case which she should have not involved. The ending was for me a little expected but then a part of the ending was unexpected.

I enjoyed reading this author’s The Couple At No. 9 which prompts me to read more books from this author. This book in my opinion was OK though not s great as The Couple at No. 9 or The Wrong Sister. The pacing was good, some twists and turns are there and the ending was kind of unexpected.

Overall this book is worth four stars.

From #1 fan. XOXO

Want to know a secret?
Love, Mom.

What Mackenzie reads leaves her in shock.
But then comes the second letter.
And the third…

Mackenzie starts her own investigation and stumbles upon secrets that her family has lived with for years.
Quickly, she realizes that her mother’s path to stardom was etched with sinister lies that might have caught up with her.

Sometimes fame is worth a murder. Or worse.
Soon, Mackenzie will come to find out that there are worse things than murder…

This is one of the best thriller books I have ever read. Like literally you wouldn’t be able to put this book down once you start reading this book.

Mackenzie Casper’s mother Elizabeth Casper was a bestselling author, having sold more than million copies under the name EV Renge. But Elizabeth Casper died in an accident. Mackenzie didn’t really have a good relationship with her mother. At the funeral, Mackenzie suddenly receives a series of letters written by her mother. By reading those letters, Mackenzie realizes that her mother might have been involved with something sinister back when she was a student in Nebraska twenty years ago. Mackenzie then set out to investigate on her own about her mother’s past with her friend EJ and uncover many dark secrets about her parents.

This book is filled with so many twists and turns that you would never expect in a typical thriller. The first few chapters were slow paced but towards the middle, the story started getting more interesting and intense. Most of the twists in this book were some crazy twists and the book started been more fast paced by the middle of the book. The story is well written with so many quotes that seem to embed in reader’s mind.

When you are young, you don’t fall for the sweet guys. You fall for the wrong ones.

Beauty and talent can be as much of a blessing as they can be a curse. An apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Sometimes the smallest things in life, so tiny we barely acknowledge them, can change us in the most profound way.”

The characters were all realistic and believable and the only characters that you were able to tolerate were Mackenzie and her friend EJ. The book was easy to follow and read.

The biggest plot twist was the ending–the most unexpected ending that I have ever read. It gave the OMG vibe and it also made me feel fully satisfied with the ending.

This is the first time I have read from this author and am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Completely worth five stars and highly recommended for people who like to read books filled with crazy twists and an unexpected plot twist.

The Surrogate Mother – Book Review

Abby wants a baby more than anything.

But after years of failed infertility treatments and adoptions that have fallen through, it seems like motherhood is not in her future. That is, until her personal assistant Monica makes a generous offer that will make all of Abby’s dreams come true.

Or all of her nightmares.

Because it turns out Monica isn’t who she says she is. The woman now carrying Abby’s child has dark, twisted secrets.

And she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Freida McFadden’s books are so addictive that you can literally finish within a day or forty-eight hours. The Surrogate Mother is a fast-paced thriller that will definitely keep you up all night.

Abby Adler is dreaming of becoming a mother and after many failed attempts with IVF she and her handsome husband Sam decided for adoption. They almost succeeded with an adoption until the mother decided to keep the baby. Abby was heartbroken until her assistant Monica suggests to Abby that she will become a surrogate mother for Abby–meaning Monica will get pregnant with Sam’s sperm inside her. Abby was initially reluctant but as she yearned to become a mother, she accepted. But later on, Abby wondered if she made a worst decision in her life and Monica isn’t the person that she seemed to be.

All Freida McFadden’s book with the exception of The Tenant are female protagonists. We see the main protagonist is Abby who is married to a handsome math professor. And in most of her books, the villain turned out to be a woman. Her books are all fast paced like this one and a page turner that you don’t actually feel the time at all. We see this whole Abby being targeted possibly by Monica and how she tries to overcome it. Not just that–there are so many twists and turns in each chapter that you don’t really know what to believe or not.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and a page turning thriller that will keep you up all night. Worth 4.5 stars.

Three identical murder confessions. Three perfect liars…

On a sunny Saturday morning, three women from the exclusive gated community of Magnolia Close walk into their local police station.

One by one, they all confess to the murder of their neighbour.

The officer takes statements from Tasha, the overwhelmed mother also struggling under the weight of caring for her parents. Beth, the quiet one, desperate for another baby but unable to fall pregnant. Georgie, the one whose life seems so dazzlingly glamorous… on the surface.

Each woman has a life – a family – that they don’t want to lose.

Each woman has a reason for wanting Johnny dead.

Each woman claims she killed him.

All of them are lying.

Three motives. Three confessions. Three liars. But what would make these women destroy their perfect lives?

An absolutely gripping, addictive, close-knit community psychological thriller that will have you breathlessly flipping the pages! Perfect for fans of Big Little Lies The Couple Next Door and The Family Upstairs .

Perfect Wives follows the story of three women–Georgie, Tasha and Beth who live in a neighborhood called Magnolia Close, an exclusive community. Tasha is an overwhelming mother with pressure to take care of her parents, Georgie’s married life doesn’t look as glamorous from inside and Beth is trying hard for another baby. Each of these women have issues with one of their neighbors, Jonny and one night, while drunk, they all confessed on how they would want to get rid of Jonny. With them, there was another woman, Keira, who instruct them how they could kill Jonny. The next day, Jonny was found murdered and now the three women are afraid. Then Keira starts blackmailing the women, claiming that she killed Jonny for them and now they should kill someone in return. The three women will do anything to protect their families and lives at any costs.

This was fast paced filled with so many twists and turns. I couldn’t put the book down. The book is told in the POVs of Georgie, Tasha and Beth and we can find the emotions, thoughts and feelings that each of these women are going through when they heard that Jonny was murdered. Each women had some reason or another as to why they would want to get rid of Georgie. I think the author did a good job of making the reader not to trust any of these women as they are all unreliable characters. And behind the glamorous lives that they seem to be having in the gated community, the author outlined the facade of what each of these women are going through behind closed doors. The ending was so unpredictable and unexpected and I actually did like the ending. This is a perfect psychological and domestic thriller if you are looking for a perfect one to read.

Another thing–being a Sri Lankan, I liked how the author made one of the characters, Tasha a Sri Lankan as it is rare to find a Sri Lankan fictional character in western fiction.

Overall this is worth 4.5 starts.

Behind Her Eyes- Book Review

Only two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.

It’s said that the only people who really know what goes on in a marriage are the couple themselves. But what if even they don’t know the truth?

David and Adele seem like the ideal pair. He’s a successful psychiatrist, she is his picture-perfect wife who adores him. But why is he so controlling? And why is she keeping things hidden?

Louise, David’s new secretary, is intrigued. But as Louise gets closer to each of them, instead of finding answers she uncovers more puzzling questions. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise could never have guessed how wrong things really are and just how far someone might go to hide it.

I haven’t watched the Netflix movie yet but then I decided to read the book before watching the movie.

I thought it was going to be really good but then I realized…it was confusing and OK.

Louise kisses a handsome doctor named David she met at the bar. Louise is a single mother and is trying to move on with her life as her ex-husband seemed to move on. Louise then bumps in Adele, a beautiful woman who also happens to be the wife of David.

Let’s just say, the three characters get themselves entangled into each other’s lives, particularly Louise.

Hearing the reviews and having high expectations on the book, I hate to say this, I thought this wasn’t as great as I thought it should. The book is slow paced and it took almost the middle of the book for the climax to build in. There were too many revelations in the book and so I kind of knew that Adele (a little spoiler alert) is not as she seemed to be. All the characters in the book are highly unlikable and whom I didn’t have any sympathy at all. David is a cheater, Louise is naive and stupid (yup she really is) and Adele is smug and manipulative.

The ending…well, the ending was a WTH moment for me. I mean seriously that Ending??!?! That was the most weird and bizarre ending I have ever read.

Overall, this book is worth 2.5 stars. Even though I didn’t really like this book, I am looking forward to read more books from this author.

If It Makes You Happy – Book Review

My new next-door neighbor seems to have everything figured out. Small town golden boy? Check. Single dad extraordinaire? Check. Hot baker forearms? I didn’t notice them, I swear.

I, on the other hand, don’t–at all–have anything figured out.

Trust me, I didn’t think taking over my mom’s dream bed and breakfast in Copper Run Vermont was going to be easy. It should be a good place to heal after my divorce. But apparently my scones belong in the garbage with my small talk skills. As pointed out by none other than Cliff.

Cliff is inescapable. He knows exactly what people need–always. His charm, the way he wears flannel, and even his pastries, make not wanting to be friends with Cliff and his daughters pretty hard.

Friends? I can make friends. That’s safe.

Except I’m leaving in three months to pass the inn off to my little sister and get the promotion in Seattle I’ve been working towards.

So ask me why I’m thinking about kissing my hot neighbor.

If you are fans of Gilmore Girls, then you really need to read this book as it has Gilmore Girl vibes in it. Oh yes, the book is almost 513 pages long but trust me and when I say it, I didn’t even realize that the book was more than 500 pages long until I actually finished it.

Michelle, or Shellie is divorced from her uptight doctor husband Allen who cheated on her with a younger woman. Michelle’s mother owned an inn in a small town called Copper Run in Vermont. The inn should belong to Michelle’s younger sister Sara but until Sara completes her art school, Michelle temporary moves to Copper Run for two months to run the inn. She meets her neighbor, Cliff who is a baker and who is charming in every way. Cliff is a single father of two girls, Emily and Brittany. Michelle is a serious girl and she asks Cliff to help her to run the inn. And as they work together Michelle and Cliff start having feelings together.

I enjoyed the whole story even though it was 500 pages long. The story is told in the POVs of Michelle and Cliff, each dealing with their own past. Michelle was uptight and little insecure around people. Cliff on the other hand is the opposite of Michelle–extrovert and a social butterfly. We meet other characters too, and we see Michelle slowly getting used to living in small town even though she knew she had to return back to Seattle, the city life that Michelle is used to. Not to mention, Rocket, Michelle’s dog is the center of the whole story.

This book as fall vibes in it and so the story is set in 1997–from September 1997 to December 1997, the time when the smartphones and social media didn’t exist and through the descriptions, you feel like you are living in the fall of 1997 in the small town called Copper Run in Vermont. We know there is sizzling chemistry between Cliff and Michelle.

I really like the author’s style of writing and I like how she takes us to a journey during the life of 1997 (I was a kid back in 1997 and so some of it did bring fond memories of living without social media and internet). You also feel like you are watching an episode of Gilmore Girls on TV. Not to mention the descriptions of baked goods made my mouth watering.

In the end, we see everyone getting back together as expected in most romance novels.

I really enjoyed this book and wroth five stars.

Fantasy Book Series I am currently reading but didn’t review yet

Fantasy Genre seem to be having series and I cannot keep up reviewing each and every book. Here are the book series that I am currently reading

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES SERIES (ACOTAR) BY SARAH J MAAS

I am yet to read the final book of the series. I think I did a review on the first book of ACOTAR series. But so far, I think I liked this series even though the fourth book wasn’t that great.

CARAVAL SERIES- STEPHANIE GARBER

I am yet to reading Spectacular but I did read all three books of the Caraval series

Thoughts–I actually liked this series–pulls you into this whole magical world. But maybe I can tell more after finish reading Spectacular.

ONCE UPON A BROKEN HEARTS SERIES – STEPHANIE GARBER

This series follows just after the events of Caraval series so it might be better to read Caraval series before starting to read this series. The main characters from Caraval series are briefly mentioned but Jack the Hearts become a main character in Once Upon a Broken Heart series. I am yet to read the third and final book of the series and so far I actually liked the series.

THRONE OF GLASS SERIES – SARAH J MAAS

I think this is one of Sarah J Maas’s best series. I read both Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight but I am yet to read the other books of the series. I think I did a review of Throne of Glass which I actually enjoyed reading.

CRUEL PRINCE SERIES – HOLLY BLACK

I read the first book and I am currently reading Wicked King the second book of the series. I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the books in this series as I enjoyed reading the first book.

WICKED GAMES SERIES – KAYLIE SMITH

I read both the books–the third book has not yet been released. Phantasma series follows two sisters Ophelia and Genevieve–Ophelie is competing in Phantasma games in Book one while Genevieve is competing in Enchantra games in Book Two. Enchantra is more enjoyable and interesting than Phantasma and there is so much spicy scenes in these two books.

FOURTH WING SERIES – REBECCA YARROS

I might be the minority here but I didn’t really like Fourth Wing as much as I wanted to like it. I already have Iron flame which I haven’t read yet.

These are the fantasy series that I am currently reading right now and feel free to leave comments on what fantasy series I should start next! (Please don’t put Harry Potter because I have read and finished the series a very long time ago)
