The Winter Girls – ARC Book Review

The Winter Girls: A totally gripping crime thriller (Agent Tori Hunter Book 2) by [Roger Stelljes]

Gazing out the cabin window at the raging blizzard, fear suddenly floods through her as she feels a stranger’s hand clamp across her mouth. No one can hear her stifled screams as she is dragged from the couch by the fire out into the snow.

When seventeen-year-old Savannah Devenish vanishes from her family’s remote vacation cabin in Minnesota, FBI Agent Tori Hunter races along treacherous icy roads to be first on the scene. Savannah’s parents are frantic with worry for their beautiful, carefree girl. Haunted by memories of her own missing sister, Tori vows to do whatever it takes to reunite this family.

When the police uncover that Savannah’s father Jacob was having an affair, they suspect his involvement, but Tori is convinced his despair is genuine. Her close relationship with the chief detective means the team won’t listen, so Tori strikes off alone, persuading Savannah’s distraught best friends to share their secrets. It seems this ‘good girl’ was sneaking out to parties to meet up with a mysterious man…

Then another teenager is snatched from the street, snowy footprints and a discarded hot chocolate cup the last trace of her. The girls are the same age, strikingly pale and blonde. Is a twisted collector stealing them away? And what chance is there that they are being kept alive?

With a deadly snowstorm closing in, Tori battles the elements—and her own team—as she follows the trail to an abandoned cabin by a frozen lake. In the basement are bedrooms filled with clothes for teenage girls. Tori was too late to save her own missing sister twenty years ago, but can she find these girls before they disappear forever?

An utterly addictive and twisty crime thriller that will have your eyes glued to the pages and your heart in your mouth. Fans of Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni and Tess Gerritsen won’t be able to put this down.

After reading the first book of the Agent Tori Hunter series and was impressed by the book that I couldn’t wait to read the second book of the series. And finally I did!!!

The story begins with seventeen-year old Savannah Devenish being kidnapped from the cabin and witnessing her own mother being shot to death. Agent Tori Hunter, who no longer works in the FBI but is a professor at the University and is working with Braddock who is also her lover. Together, they discover a sex trafficking that is happening around Minnesota.

I must say, just like the first book, this book was so intense!!!! It was as if I was going on a roller coaster ride with both Hunter and Braddock and felt like in a part of the game. The writing was good, lots of unexpected twists and turns and quiet a fast paced thriller! I felt like I was in a cat and mouse chase game with Hunter and Braddock as they try to track down Savannah’s abductor. Not only, I felt as if I am in some kind of action packed thriller, waiting to know what is going to happen next!!!

Truly enjoyed reading the second book and this book is unputdownable, that will make you go on a roller coaster ride, fast paced thriller with twists and turns. Worth five stars!!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing me ARC. The review is based on my most honest opinion.

Books vs Movie – Part 1

So as a book lover, how do you feel when the book you really loved was made into a movie? Well, sometimes, there are certain books I wish was made into a movie. But when I see the movie, I feel the book was better!

So today, I am going to select a book that was made into a movie and compare them with each other.

So the book I am going to select today is…The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Image result for the kite runner

Have you read the Kite Runner? If you haven’t, then you should buy the book and read it. One of the powerful, haunting and emotional books I have read, and debut book of Khaled Hosseini and talks about friendship between two Afghan boys.

This book was adapted ino a film

Image result for the kite runner

Have you watched the movie? Maybe you have. But if you have not read the book nor watched the movie, my suggestion is, read the book before watching the movie.

I have read the book AND have watched the movie so that’s why I selected this book. So here are the pros and cons of the movie.

Pros.

  • Hassan is my favorite character in both the book and the movie and the boy who portrayed as Hassan did a good job.
  • Even Amir, though he is not really my favorite character (until the end), both the child actor and the adult actor did a good job portraying the role
  • The music background used in the movie was beautiful and really outlined the movie

Cons

  • I felt the movie didn’t really do much justice to the book. I was so emotional and almost cried while reading the book, but with the movie, I didn’t feel like that way much.
  • The movie was a bit rushed in my opinion and missed out chunks of some important events that were in the book–particularly the adoption part. I am not going to spoil much but Amir went through a lot when he was going to adopt Sohrab, Hassan’s son.

My verdict?

The book is better than the movie!!!!!

So if you watched the Kite Runner do you agree with me? Leave a comment below!

The third book of the island series by Lilac Mills though the characters and the plot line are different. Each book is a standalone but nonetheless, truth to say, I have gotten addicted to these island series!

Elspeth is a widow mourning at the loss of her husband Ray. Every morning, before going to work, she would talk to her husband, whose ashes are buried under the orchid tree. Then her life changes when her friends, Amanda and Toni asks Elspeth to provide lodging to a British traveler named Charles Brown and Elspeth realizes she feels dizzy when she is around him…

Just like the previous book I have read from the island series, this book was really good!!! Warm, funny at some parts, I do really like Elspeth as a character–her character is so well written and also I really wanted her to fall in love again!!! While reading the book, I really felt as if I was on holiday in a Spanish island as author used realistic descriptions to make the reader feel like they are on holiday with Elspeth and Charles! The writing was really great and I got drawn into the story. Elspeth is actually a very likable character and so does Charles. And the ending? It was really sweet and heartwarming ending!

Overall, this book is a heartwarming love story and is actually perfect for someone who is looking for a summer read! Worth five stars! I hope there will be a fourth book soon!!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for granting me the ARC of this book. This review is based on my honest opinion.

First of all I love the cover design. Actually nearly all Holly Martin’ book covers are so very pretty!!! And second of all, I love the story!

Clover Phillips has moved from London to the small Cornish town and runs the hotel with her sister, Aria and Skye. When her childhood friend, Angel Mazzeo returns back from Dubai from a business trip, Clover develops feelings towards Angel but after what she had gone through in her previous relationship, she wasn’t sure…the story is set during the Halloween time, filled with Halloween games, costume party vivid descriptions set during the autumn season.

I really thought this story was quite warm and funny romantic story! There were certain parts in the book that I actually burst out laughing and I must say, I really do like the chemistry between Angel and Clover!!! I also like the warm sister relationship between Clover, Aria and Skye and to be honest, while I was reading the story, I felt as if I was also a part of that community!!! The book is well written and the author did a good job drawing the reader into the story.

Overall, despite the fact that I am not a romance book fanatic, this book truly warmed me up! Truly a heart felling love story filled with laughter and you feel as if you are in that Cornish town!! Worth five stars!

Alone in the Woods – ARC Book Review

Alone in the Woods: A completely gripping crime thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat (Detective Alyssa Wyatt) by [Charly Cox]

The sudden appearance of a man’s booted feet had Addis snapping her mouth shut. Screaming, she kicked out at the tall, muscular guy as he dragged her from beneath the desk…

It was a scene from a horror movie; Gabriel Kensington and his wife Lydia found, brutally slain in their luxurious home in New Mexico. The frantic, whispered phone call from their teenage daughter Addis, spending the evening with best friend Emerson, quickly alerts the authorities to the killings – and worse, that the killer is still inside the house.

But when detective Alyssa Wyatt and the squad appear at the house, the unthinkable has happened – the girls are nowhere to be found.

Waking up in a dilapidated cabin, nestled high in the woods north of Albuquerque, the girls find themselves at the mercy of a brutal stranger who could take their life at any moment. While they fight for survival, it’s up to Alyssa Wyatt and her partner Cord to discover just why the Kensingtons have been targeted – and fast.

Because for Addis and Emerson, solving this mystery might just mean the difference between survival – or an unthinkable death…

This is the third book of the Detective Alyssa Wyatt series.

After reading Toy Box, I badly want to read more books from this author and so I was so happy when Hera publishers granted me this ARC! Detective Alyssa is back in her game when a privileged couple, Gabriel and Lydia Kensington was found brutally murdered in their homes and their daughter Addis along with her best friend Emerson are missing. Alyssa finds that Gabriel is an PI and believed that one of the cold cases would have led ultimately to his death and along with her partner Cord, they would set to find the murderer…

This book was AMAZING!! Again an action packed filled book with twists and unexpected turns you would generally expect in a thriller. And also quite fast paced too!!!! I really like how Addis and Emerson stick together after they being kidnapped and the ordeal they both faced together seemed realistic to me. It was also unputdownable that I couldn’t wait to get to the ending!! And the ending–there is just one word–UNEXPECTED. Totally unexpected twisted ending!

Overall, I give this book five stars!!! Can’t wait for Book 4 to come!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Hera publishers. This review is strictly based on my opinion.

My Great Ex-Scape: A laugh out loud romantic comedy for 2021 by [Portia MacIntosh]

A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from bestseller, Portia MacIntosh. Perfect for fans of Holly Martin, Sophie Ranald and Zara Stoneley.

No. of pages:- 280 pages

Date published:- January 16th 2020

Genre:- Romance

So after reading The Plus One (which I had done a book review on this blog last year), I always wanted to read Portia McIntosh books and I was excited to get my hands on this book. However, unfortunately, this book did not live up to my expectations I had with her books.

Rosie Jones gets dumped while on air in the quiz show and goes viral. She quits her job and then finds a bunch of roses with a note left behind in front of her apartment, believing that one of ex boyfriends had left those flowers, she embarks on a cruise tour with the money she won from the quiz show to find which boyfriend had left those flowers.

I do like the plot and I believe the story is funny but unfortunately, it was a bit boring to me. It was all about the cruise in general and I didn’t really enjoy the story much. However the writing was good and there were parts in the story where I burst out laughing.

Overall, this was an OK romance story–worth three stars

It’s only when Madison finally finds the knife used to harm Nikki, tucked in an almost impossible to find hiding place, that she knows she is closing-in on a twisted killer. But the last person she expects to see dragged into the department in handcuffs is her own missing son…

This is the second book of the Detective Madison Harper series and I have to say, I was not disappointed at all!

So we follow Madison, Nate and Brody on the road trip back to Madison’s hometown, Lost Creek. Past memories keep flooding her with her ex-girlfriend Stephanie being brutally murdered. While trying to clear her name and to find the real person who killed Officer Levy, a body of a teenage girl, Nikki Jackson was found in the amusement park. The police ruled it as suicide but gradually it became apparent that it was murder. Then Madison’s estranged son Owen known as Mason McCoy is suspected for the girl’s death…

This was simply a wow! Quite unputdownable, with twists and turns. I felt like I was watching some action packed filled drama while reading this book and the author actually did a good job bringing the reader into the story! Truly intense as well and you would actually feel sorry for Madison as she tries to clear her name for a murder she didn’t commit. I just read this book in one go and I simply couldn’t put the book down!!!!

Overall, this book gave me such as roller coaster drive filled with drama, action, thrills and twists. I simply cannot wait for Book 3 to come! Worth five stars!

Audiobooks or Normal books?

Hey all! I decided to try out a different topic today. Would you prefer audiobooks or just books? Well let’s see

So lately, through Scribd, some of the books I have been listening through audiobooks. Here are some advantages of listening to audiobooks, based on my opinion

  1. You can used the audiobook while you are working–in this case, while I was doing chores around the house, I used audiobook to listen and it was actually easier for me.
  2. Must easier and faster to finish–in my opinion, audiobooks are actually easier and faster. I realized I was able to finish audiobooks much faster than with normal books
  3. You can listen to an audiobook anywhere you go–I don’t usually go out but when I do, I download audiobooks on my phone and it was easy.

Then what are the disadvantages of audiobooks?

  1. If you get a bad narrator, then the story will be completely ruined and you don’t feel like enjoying audiobooks but wished you read a book!

So personally, I think audiobooks are good for people with busy chaotic life but then nothing beats a book and they are literally both the same!

One Perfect Grave- ARC Book Review

One Perfect Grave: A gripping and heart-pounding crime thriller (Nikki Hunt Book 2) by [Stacy Green]

She didn’t see the patch of black ice until it was too late. The car started to spin, and as it veered off into the deep ditch and the mounds of snow beside the road, she saw him. The little boy frozen in the ice.

When the remains of two bodies are found in an open grave along a desolate highway in Stillwater, Minnesota, Special Agent Nikki Hunt knows exactly who they are. The bright blue jacket lying on the frozen earth belongs to Kellan Rhodes, the missing boy she’s desperately been trying to find for the last two days. The other body is his mother Dana, who had been Nikki’s lead suspect.

Although the wounds on Dana’s body suggest she murdered her son and took her own life, Nikki finds evidence that suggests she was a victim too. Dana was desperately trying to regain custody of Kellan, and Nikki finds boot prints at the scene that belong to someone else.

When another child is reported missing, local journalist Caitlin Newport claims the cases are linked: Zach Reeves was taken away from his own mother in a custody battle, just like Kellan was.

Caitlin once helped Nikki find out the truth about her own parents’ murders, but her desire for a story nearly cost Nikki her life. Now, Nikki must decide if she can trust Caitlin again, before time runs out to find the killer and bring Zach home alive…

An unputdownable thriller that will make your heart pound until its final, shocking conclusion. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and readers who want to binge read into the night.

No. of pages:- 292 pages

Date published:- will be published on 25th February 2021

Genre:- Thriller

Wow!!!!! This book just like the first book blew me off completely!!!!

The second book of the Nikki Hunt series, FBI Agent Nikki Hunt investigate the murders of Kellan Rhodes, the boy who went missing for two days and who Nikki was trying to find along with his mother Dana, who was the biological mother of Kellan and who was trying to fight the custody of Kellan Rhodes. Dana was a former drug addict who apparently failed a recent drug test, revoking her of her parental rights over Kellan and so Nikki believed that Dana would have kidnapped Kellan and may have accidentally killed him and killed herself. However, as the investigation dwells deeper, finds that this suicide thing looks more like as if someone staged it, prompting Nikki to investigate further, particularly the relationship with Dana and her sister Maggie…

Meanwhile, Caitlin, the journalist that Nikki doesn’t get along asks Nikki to investigate the missing boy case of Zach Reeves disappeared on the same day as Kellan was abducted. While Caitlin believes that the two cases are connected, Nikki doesn’t trust Caitlin due to their past turmoil relationship…

I read this book in one go! I must say, the author somehow knows how to capture the reader into the thrill ride. I was not disappointed with the second book. Coupled with the case, there’s much drama in the story, including Nikki’s complicated relationship with Rory and I was almost put on the edge of my seat, wondering if someone actually killed Dana, whether her sister was involved or if someone else was involved and those questions were nagging me as I read this book!!! The plot was unpredictable just like the previous books and there were twists and turns in the end.

This was a fast paced thriller that had twists and turns, that you wouldn’t want to put down and would read in one go!! It was that good! Worth five stars!

Lost Souls – ARC Book Review

Lost Souls: An absolutely gripping crime thriller with nail-biting suspense by [Chris Merritt]

Please forgive me for what I’m about to do…

Standing at the school gates, he waits until the last child leaves the safety of the playground. And then he follows at a distance, keeping to the shadows. Only he knows what’s going to happen next.

In a quiet church, on a busy London street, 12-year-old Donovan Blair is found dead. His hands are clasped together as if in prayer. Just hours ago, he was happily playing with his friends at school, but now his body is lifeless, and his killer is long gone.

Detective Dan Lockhart is working alone on his wife’s missing person’s case when he receives a call telling him to get to the crime scene at St Mary’s Church immediately.

Bringing in psychologist Dr Lexi Green to help profile the murderer, Dan is convinced that the killer has provided a clue by leaving the body in a prayer position, and Lexi agrees. As they try to get into the mind of the person responsible, another victim is found. A 13-year-old girl, left in a different church, posed in exactly the same way.

Fearing the murderer may already have another child in his sights, Dan and Lexi work together to establish links between the two deaths, and soon discover that not only were both children in care – they had attended the same school. And when it emerges that Lexi’s new boyfriend works there, things become difficult between her and Dan. How much can he tell Lexi about the case? And could she be at risk?

As Dan makes a breakthrough in the investigation, he receives devastating news about his wife, Jess. But with children’s lives at stake and Lexi in danger, Dan must put his personal emotions aside and chase the killer. Can he and Lexi work out who is behind the murders before another vulnerable child is taken?

This nail-biting crime book is perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan and Robert Dugoni. Once you pick up Lost Souls, you won’t be able to put it down!

He did AGAIN!

This is the second book I have read from the author and the third book of the Detective Lockhart and Green series. The story begins with a murder of a eleven-year-old, Donovan who is in the foster care system and who was found murdered inside a church with a Bible verse next to him. While finding out what happened to his wife, Detective Lockhart along with his MET team and Dr. Green sets out to find this deranged killer who is targeting children in the foster care system.

The story was well written, and again, I loved reading the parts, going into the minds of the killer (I know it’s creepy but wouldn’t it make the story juicier?) and the story was fast paced with thrills going on and twists and turns. Too many suspects with questionable backgrounds in the books that you don’t really know which one of those suspects can be the killer and that makes it more and more interesting! Not predictable which I like about the thrillers. Overall, it was a great thriller, unputdownable and fast paced. Worth five stars in my opinion!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is solely based on my honest opinion.

Chris Merritt

Hello! I’m a British author whose crime thrillers combine psychology, suspense, and characters you care about.

All my novels are set in London, where I live. My first trilogy starred Zac Boateng and Kat Jones, two detectives motivated by family, who tackle organised crime and police corruption. LAST WITNESS, the second Boateng and Jones book, reached #13 in the UK Kindle chart in 2019.

My second series features detective Dan Lockhart – an ex-soldier with a missing wife – and psychologist Dr Lexi Green, an American living in London. These novels are darker, more psychological serial-killer cases, with romantic relationships as a central theme.

I began writing fiction in 2014, after previous careers as a diplomat, based in Iraq and Jerusalem, and later as a psychologist working with victims and perpetrators of crime. I specialised in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which sparked my interest in telling stories about how people cope when faced with extreme adversity.

Now, I spend most of my time writing novels and drinking coffee while *thinking* about writing novels. When I’m not writing, I love climbing and playing basketball.
