The latest twisty psychological thriller from internationally-bestselling author Lucy Clarke, One of the Girls is the delicious story of a bachelorette trip on a stunning Greek island… that ends in murder. It was supposed to be the perfect weekend away. Six very different women travel to a sun-soaked Greek island for a bachelorette trip, to celebrate Lexi’s upcoming wedding. From the glorious ocean views to the quaint tavernas and whitewashed streets, the vacation seems too good to be true. But dangerous undercurrents run beneath the sunset swims and midnight cocktails – because each of the women is hiding a secret. Someone is determined to make sure that Lexi’s marriage never happens – and that one of them doesn’t leave the island alive.Gripping, twisty, and full of sun-soaked suspense, this timely thriller examines the joys of female friendship…as well as the deadly consequences when a relationship goes wrong.

Sunday Times bestseller, Lucy Clarke, writes from a beach hut, using the inspiration from the wild south coast to craft her stories. Her debut novel, THE SEA SISTERS, was a Richard & Judy Book Club pick, and she has since published A SINGLE BREATH, THE BLUE/NO ESCAPE, LAST SEEN, YOU LET ME IN, and THE CASTAWAYS, which was a Waterstones Thriller of the Month. Lucy’s seventh novel, ONE OF THE GIRLS, is ‘an electric, sun-soaked thriller’, released in May 2022.

Lucy’s books are published in twenty territories. THE BLUE, is currently being filmed for a major international TV series for Paramount+ and will be on screens in 2023.

Lucy is a passionate traveller and fresh air enthusiast. She’s married to a professional windsurfer and, together with their two children, they spend their winters travelling and their summers at home by the sea.

So after reading The Castaway which actually took nearly my breath, I was excited for her new novel, One Of the Girls.

A group of friends get together in a villa in Greece to celebrate the hen weekend. But during their stay, secrets are revealed and then suddenly someone dies.

The story is mainly told from all the girls present in the villa perspective–Lexi, Bella, Fen, Robyn, Eleanor and Ana. Lexi and Bella are friends, Robyn is also friends with Lexi and Bella. Ana and Lexi have met each other at a yoga class and Eleanor is Lexi’s future sister-in-law. There was also someone else in the background who is plotting to do something. However, the more I read the book, the more I find that this is more a girl drama than a simple thriller. I did enjoy reading the book but it wasn’t enjoyable as I did with The Castaway. Personally, I wished there were not much POVs and except for Lexi and Bella, I didn’t find the other characters much fun. However, what I actually enjoyed about this novel is the setting–set in a scenic view of the Greek island overlooking the sea and the descriptions of the villa and the sceneries made me imagine that I was also celebrating the Hen weekend with the characters.

So if you like a thriller based in a mythical island with secrets, then this thriller is one for you. Worth four stars–mainly due to the writing more than the plot.

Julia Bird’s picturesque Cotswolds life is everything she’d dreamed of. Until, that is, she discovers a dead body in the library…

Julia Bird had imagined the quiet of rural life would be soothing after years in the city, but she finds she can’t just sit still.Determined to throw herself into village activities, she joins the library just in time to attend a talk by celebrated local author Vincent Andrews.

Charming, devilishly handsome and talented, Vincent teases the crowd with a reading from his forthcoming novel. Set in a village bearing strange similarities to Berrywick, with characters the audience start to recognise, Vincent hints of dark secrets to be revealed, to gasps of outrage from the room. The meeting ends in uproar, and, just hours later, Vincent’s dead body is discovered behind the bookshelves…

As one of the last people to see him alive, Julia feels morally bound to help the police investigate. With her trusty Labrador, Jake, at her side, she decides to do her own sleuthing and quickly discovers that Vincent’s personal life is messy, his finances are in disarray and his book sales are declining. But most of all, remembering her neighbours’ faces at the book reading, Julia wonders if one of them could have lost the plot enough to kill…

As Julia interrogates the suspects, she walks straight into another scene of murder and mayhem, and realises Vincent’s manuscript is now missing. There’s someone out there who’s deadly serious about keeping their secrets unpublished. Will Julia be able to stop them, before anyone else gets hurt?

Brilliantly twisty, this completely thrilling cozy mystery is perfect for fans of M.C. Beaton, Helena Marchmont and Clare Chase.

Murder in the library is sound thrilling and interesting and this book is just that. This is the second book of Julia Bird series. Here Julia Bird attends a book tak attended by a legendary handsome author, Vincent Andrews. But the next day, Julia finds Vincent stabbed inside the library. As the police investigate this case, Julia also gets herself involved as who would want to murder Vincent with so many suspects in the list. I greatly enjoyed reading the first book of the series. I did like this second book but this wasn’t as great as the first book. The pace was a bit slow but it got interesting towards the middle and the end. There weren’t much twists and turns in the book but the writing was good. However there was so much drama, jealousy and suspense that kept me interested in this book towards the end. Overall, it was a good cozy thriller–worth 3.5 stars! Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

Detective Morgan Brooke starts investigating the case when she gets a phone call that another girl named MIlly goes missing. Milly was last seen talking to a colleague of Morgan when she disappeared.

The thriller was fast paced and the author knows how to put the reader on the edge. I really had a great time reading Morgan Brooke series and so this book did not disappoint me as a result. There were twists and turns, and the ending was unexpected as well. This kind of gave me a serial killer vibe as well and I do like the fact that the infamous American serial killers like Ted Bundy and BTK killers are mentioned in this book. Overall, this book gave me a thrill ride along the way and I cannot wait for the next book of the Morgan Brooke series!

If you are looking for a fast paced unputdownable thriller, then I highly recommend this book. If you have not started on the series yet, then I recommend you to start reading Morgan Brooke series as I can assure you, the series will give you a thrill ride! Worth five stars!

A novel tracing a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus.

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors–until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.

This is one of the most beautiful and heartwarming story I have ever read!

You ever heard of an animal bond with humans? Usually, the bond would be either a cat or dog with the human. But in this story, this story is about a bond between an Octopus named Marcellus and a seventy five year old woman named Tova Sullivan.

Tova is a recent widow and many years ago, in 1989, her eighteen-year-old son, Eric died in the sea with no reason as to why. Every night, Tova would work in Seattle Aquarium as a cleaner and while cleaning, she meets and befriends with an octopus named Marcellus. Meanwhile, Cameron comes all the way from California to Washington to look for his biological father. When Tova gets into an accident, Cameron gets the cleaning job and by chance he gets to meet Tova. Marcellus knows a deep secret between Tova and Cameron and is determined to unite the two together.

I listened to the audiobook and I have to say, the narrator did a good job with the narration. The story is mainly talking about relationships, family bonds and how Tova is grieving for the death of her son in which she wanted to find answers. We also see Cameron who is not very lucky. The story is beautifully crafted making the reader actually like Marcellus. There were some parts where it was emotional and I was literally drawn into the story. As a reader I was listening to the story intently, wondering what is the secret and why was Marcellus determined to bring both Cameron and Tova together. I do like the other characters that surround Tova and Cameron, Cameron’s new romance with a woman named Avery. I also liked the fact that Marcellus perspective was also involved in the book, which to me, I enjoyed reading his version of the story. I also liked the relationship between Marcellus and Tova as well, which I enjoyed reading about. I simply couldn’t even believe that this is actually the author’s debut book because it was so beautifully written. Despite the fact that there is a happy ending for Tova and Cameron, personally I was sad for Marcellus although I was happy that he was saved (SPOILER ALERT)

I highly recommend this beautiful book–the cover is beautiful but the story is the most beautiful and heartwarming story I have read. Worth five stars!

Lily has never forgotten the man that got away . . . but she certainly hasn’t forgiven him either!

As the daughter of a notorious treasure hunter, Lily makes ends meet using her father’s coveted hand-drawn maps, guiding tourists on fake treasure hunts through the canyons of Utah. When the man she once loved walks back into her life with a motley crew of friends, ready to hit the trails, Lily can’t believe her eyes. Frankly, she’d like to take him out into the wilderness – and leave him there.

Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily is all business: it’s never going to happen. But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives, and their hearts, on the adventure of a lifetime . .

I actually loved this book to my own utter surprise! The story starts with the romance between Lily and Leo up in Wyoming. But ten years later, Lily and Leo have broken up. Lily’s father Duke is dead and Lily is struggling organizing treasure hunts across Utah for adventurers. Then after many years, Lily meets Leo again. She was angry with him and soon while looking for the mysterious treasure that Lily’s father had hidden, Lily and Leo’s relationship seem to rekindle soon.

I read their My Half-Night Stand and to be honest, Something Wilder is very different although there is a romantic setting in the book. I actually felt like I am reading scavenger hunt in the area and actually simply couldn’t put the book down as I was wondering will they ever find that so called treasure. This book also had kind of an Indiana Jones vibe in it as well–sleeping in the tents with no mobile phone signals around, and I actually felt like a part of the story. The history of the treasure hunt also drew me into the story and the ending, was like a scene from an adventure movie! I also do like the frienship between Lily and Nicole and also the small budding romance between Nicole and Walter as well. There were some funny parts in the book which made me laugh out loud and overall, I simply couldn’t put the book down and greatly enjoyed reading this book.

Overall, I rate this book as 4.5 stars!

Serial Killers Thriller – Part 1

Part of what makes me interested in reading thrillers is the serial killer vibe in the book. I know it may sound disturbing but then it is sometimes fascinating to read about serial killers.

Here are some of the serial killer thrillers I have read.

  1. Jar of Hearts – Jennifer Hiller

2. A Flicker in the Dark – Stacy Willingham

3. My Sister The Serial Killer – Oyinkan Braithwaite

4. The Good Lie – A.R. Torres

5. The Surgeon – Tess Gerritson

My name is Isabel Butterworth. Your name is Isabel Butterworth.

We’re around the same age. We live in the same town.

But your life is more exciting than mine, isn’t it? Richer, dramatic, more fulfilling.

Imagine if I’d never found out about you…

But I have. Because someone mistook me for you.

And now I can’t stop thinking about you because I know you’re in trouble. You need my help.

And I need a way to get to know you.

To save you.

To be you

Two women, with the same name–Isabella Butterworth. One is leading a sort of fancy life even though her marriage is failing. The other not much of a fancy life. Then one of them gets mistakenly attacked by a man and then the other one is determined to find out more about the other person.

This was a gripping psychological thriller. It was truly engaging and fast paced and towards the fifty percent of the book, it got more and more intriguing and interesting with the twists and turns along the way. I like the fact that the author gave the reader an unexpected twist which also made the reader wanting to know what is going to happen next. But unfortunately, the book which I was going to give five stars dropped down to four stars as I didn’t really like the ending. However, the twists and turns in each of the chapter made me hook into the story and I actually enjoyed reading the book. I have read books written by this author before and this book was a complete surprise.

So if you like a gripping twisty and unputdownable thriller then this book is one for you–worth four stars.

Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who’s cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town… where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong.

As seen on E!Online, PopSugar, CNN, EliteDaily, Vulture, Buzzfeed, Bustle, the Nerd Daily, PARADE, LA Magazine, Country Living, USA Today, and more!

Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar… in Washington.

Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.

Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

OK, I didn’t realize that this book was so good!

Piper Bellinger is in heaps of trouble after her wild party back in LA. Her stepfather, Daniel sends Piper and her sister Hannah to Westport, Washington to learn about their biological father Henry Cross. Piper meets Brendan who is a moody captain of the ship. The two then eventually start falling into a romantic relationship.

I actually enjoyed reading this book–it was so engaging and I really like nearly all the characters in the book. The author has done a good job of drawing the reader into the story, and I really like how the relationship slowly developing between Piper and Brendan. There were steamy scenes in the book but it was OK. I also like the relationship between Piper and Hannah as well. The description of the small town also made me feel like I was in this small fishing town with the characters as well! Overall, the ending was expected but I actually enjoyed reading the ending.

Overall, this book worth five stars and can’t wait for the Bellinger sister series Book 2, Hook line and Sinker featuring Piper’s sister Hannah.

New York Times Bestselling author Tessa Bailey can solve all problems except for her own, so she focuses those efforts on stubborn, fictional blue collar men and loyal, lovable heroines. Rachel sat at the kitchen table, trying to take everything in. She still couldn’t believe what her father had done. Clutching a faded photograph and a necklace in her hands, all she knew was that in her mother’s final days, she would do anything to protect her.

The call came on a seemingly ordinary day. But as soon as Rachel heard the pain in her sister’s voice, she had to face the fact that life as she knew it was about to be shattered: “It’s mum. She’s not well. She doesn’t have much time.”

Though her heart breaks to leave her husband and children behind, Rachel knows the right thing is to return home to care for her mother Janet. Their relationship has been strained for years. This may be the last chance for them both to heal.

Walking up to the front gate of her childhood home, Rachel is overwhelmed with memories: of hazy summers playing with her sister, of laughter ringing through the house, of the accident which cost their father his life. After that day, Rachel’s relationship with her mother changed forever.

Rachel has never forgiven herself for what happened and it is clear Janet hasn’t either. Determined to make amends, Rachel begins to get her mother’s house in order. But hidden in the cellar, Rachel unearths a devastating secret. A faded photograph and a tarnished necklace are the only clues to unravelling a secret that should have remained hidden.

Can Rachel unravel the mystery when it has the power to destroy her family? And when she finally discovers the truth, will it destroy everything she has ever known?

Leah can’t remember a time when she didn’t love writing. From creating fake newspapers to writing letters to the editor, scribbling something was always on the agenda. Even the rejections she received after completing her first novel at age 13 didn’t dent her enthusiasm.

So it makes sense, then, that she pursued a career in anything but writing. Public relations, teaching, recruitment, editing medical journals — even a stint painting houses — until she finally succumbed once more to the lure of the blank page.

When she’s not being jumped on by her young son or burning supper while thinking of plot-lines, Leah can be found furiously tapping away on her laptop, trying not to check Twitter or Facebook.

Leah also writes romantic comedies under the name Talli Roland

Wow…..I actually enjoyed reading this book. From the start to finish, I was literally hooked into the book.

The story starts with Rachel Verma, who is happily married receives a call from her sister Victoria to help her to take care of their ailing mother. Rachel had an estranged relationship with her mother and was determined to rekindle her relationship with her mother. While cleaning up the cellar, Rachel comes across a faded photograph and a skeletal remains of a woman. Now Rachel realizes that her family had been hiding dark secrets.

The story divides between the present day in Rachel’s perspective and the past dated 1986 told in the form of a woman named Sam, who comes to the small village and meets a man named Sean and fall in love with him. As the story progresses, we find Rachel determine to protect her mother as she is trying to rebuild the relationship with her and the suspicion that Sam’s new boyfriend Sean might be married. The ending was what blew me away, although I kind of knew that it was going to happen. The author also has done a good job of drawing the reader into the story and making the reader feel like part of the story. I also like Rachel’s married life and her friendship with the policeman, Lucas.

Overall, if you like a family drama book packed with family secrets, then this book is one for you–quite unputdownable and emotional and heartbreaking as well. As this is the first time I am reading a book by this author, I am looking forward to read more. Worth five stars!

‘Tis the season for finding love… and the perfect book

With just two weeks until Christmas, everything in Clove Lore should be perfect. But the latest holidaymaker to the Borrow a Bookshop is feeling far from festive…

Icelandic ex-bookseller Magnús Sturluson might be surrounded by love stories in the Bookshop, but he’s nursing a sadness that not even fiction can fix.

When Alexandra Robinson finds herself stranded in Clove Lore, she finds a safe place to hide from heartbreak. After all, all that’s waiting for her at home is a cheater boyfriend and the memories of her parents. As Alex finds herself embraced by the quirky village community, she finds her tough exterior thawing – and as she grows closer to Magnús, she finds an equally soft heart under his gruff shell.

It seems that Clove Lore is working its magic once again – until a great flood on Christmas Eve brings devastation in its wake. It’s up to Magnús and Alex to batten down the hatches and help bring the village back together again, while also introducing the locals to the Icelandic tradition of the jólabókaflóð – Yule book flood – where families and friends gather on Christmas Eve to exchange books and read together.

But can Magnús and Alex truly rescue the ruins of the village, and salvage their Christmas spirit? Or is there another complication lurking even closer than they thought?

A totally uplifting read that will lighten the winter gloom, for fans of Jenny Colgan and Trisha Ashley. Booklovers will adore this seasonal treat!

It’s almost Christmas time! Christmas at the Borrow a Bookshop is a romance novel that will keep you hooked from the start till the end!

This is the second book of the Borrow a Bookshop series and I actually enjoyed reading both. The story follows an Icelandic man named Magnus who used to be a bookseller and who is nursing his old wounds. Then comes Alex, who finds herself stranded in Clove Lore saved by Magnus. The story follows how the friendship and eventually the romance between Alex and Magnus developed.

I do like the Icelandic phrases that were used in the book, making the reader feel a touch of Icelandic culture. I also like the writing and I feel like I was watching a really interesting Hallmark Christmas while reading the novel. I also found it interesting to read about Yule Book flood where families and friends get together to read a book and I thought it was such a unique thing to do.

Overall, if you like to read a good Christmas romance novel, then I would highly recommend this novel for you. Worth four stars.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Hera for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
