Cry for Help – ARC Book Review

Cry For Help: An addictive and gripping mystery and suspense novel (Detective Madison Harper Book 2) by [Wendy Dranfield]

Shivering in the early morning chill, the caretaker flips the switch on the Ferris wheel and stumbles back in shock. The teenage girl’s body is slumped in a halo of pretty colored lights, long red hair spilling over her tear-stained cheeks, her eyes fixed forever on her dangling feet.

When teenager Nikki Jackson’s body is found at an amusement park, just hours after Fourth of July fireworks lit up the night sky, the Lost Creek police rule her death as suicide—a devastating final act from a girl who had lost all hope. But the absence of the knife used to make the wounds on her delicate wrists makes Detective Madison Harper think otherwise. And the partial fingerprint found on the girl’s face proves her right. Someone else was with Nikki in her final moments

Back home in Colorado for the first time in seven years to investigate the murder of a woman with ties to the son she lost to the care system, the pressure is on for Madison to work both cases at once. Fearing the team has missed a vital clue, Madison searches the crime scene alone and finds the last thing she ever expected: a note proving the victims knew each other, and that the cases are linked. Is this a coincidence, proof a dangerous murderer is on the loose, or a trap set to lead Madison off the trail?

It’s only when Madison finally finds the knife used to harm Nikki, tucked in an almost impossible to find hiding place, that she knows she is closing-in on a twisted killer. But the last person she expects to see dragged into the department in handcuffs is her own missing son…

An absolutely unputdownable crime thriller that will have you sleeping with the lights on. Addictive reading for anyone who loves Lisa Regan, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.

This is the second book of the Detective Madison Harper series and I have to say, I was not disappointed at all!

So we follow Madison, Nate and Brody on the road trip back to Madison’s hometown, Lost Creek. Past memories keep flooding her with her ex-girlfriend Stephanie being brutally murdered. While trying to clear her name and to find the real person who killed Officer Levy, a body of a teenage girl, Nikki Jackson was found in the amusement park. The police ruled it as suicide but gradually it became apparent that it was murder. Then Madison’s estranged son Owen known as Mason McCoy is suspected for the girl’s death…

This was simply a wow! Quite unputdownable, with twists and turns. I felt like I was watching some action packed filled drama while reading this book and the author actually did a good job bringing the reader into the story! Truly intense as well and you would actually feel sorry for Madison as she tries to clear her name for a murder she didn’t commit. I just read this book in one go and I simply couldn’t put the book down!!!!

Overall, this book gave me such as roller coaster drive filled with drama, action, thrills and twists. I simply cannot wait for Book 3 to come! Worth five stars!

Audiobooks or Normal books?

Hey all! I decided to try out a different topic today. Would you prefer audiobooks or just books? Well let’s see

So lately, through Scribd, some of the books I have been listening through audiobooks. Here are some advantages of listening to audiobooks, based on my opinion

  1. You can used the audiobook while you are working–in this case, while I was doing chores around the house, I used audiobook to listen and it was actually easier for me.
  2. Must easier and faster to finish–in my opinion, audiobooks are actually easier and faster. I realized I was able to finish audiobooks much faster than with normal books
  3. You can listen to an audiobook anywhere you go–I don’t usually go out but when I do, I download audiobooks on my phone and it was easy.

Then what are the disadvantages of audiobooks?

  1. If you get a bad narrator, then the story will be completely ruined and you don’t feel like enjoying audiobooks but wished you read a book!

So personally, I think audiobooks are good for people with busy chaotic life but then nothing beats a book and they are literally both the same!

One Perfect Grave- ARC Book Review

One Perfect Grave: A gripping and heart-pounding crime thriller (Nikki Hunt Book 2) by [Stacy Green]

She didn’t see the patch of black ice until it was too late. The car started to spin, and as it veered off into the deep ditch and the mounds of snow beside the road, she saw him. The little boy frozen in the ice.

When the remains of two bodies are found in an open grave along a desolate highway in Stillwater, Minnesota, Special Agent Nikki Hunt knows exactly who they are. The bright blue jacket lying on the frozen earth belongs to Kellan Rhodes, the missing boy she’s desperately been trying to find for the last two days. The other body is his mother Dana, who had been Nikki’s lead suspect.

Although the wounds on Dana’s body suggest she murdered her son and took her own life, Nikki finds evidence that suggests she was a victim too. Dana was desperately trying to regain custody of Kellan, and Nikki finds boot prints at the scene that belong to someone else.

When another child is reported missing, local journalist Caitlin Newport claims the cases are linked: Zach Reeves was taken away from his own mother in a custody battle, just like Kellan was.

Caitlin once helped Nikki find out the truth about her own parents’ murders, but her desire for a story nearly cost Nikki her life. Now, Nikki must decide if she can trust Caitlin again, before time runs out to find the killer and bring Zach home alive…

An unputdownable thriller that will make your heart pound until its final, shocking conclusion. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and readers who want to binge read into the night.

Wow!!!!! This book just like the first book blew me off completely!!!!

The second book of the Nikki Hunt series, FBI Agent Nikki Hunt investigate the murders of Kellan Rhodes, the boy who went missing for two days and who Nikki was trying to find along with his mother Dana, who was the biological mother of Kellan and who was trying to fight the custody of Kellan Rhodes. Dana was a former drug addict who apparently failed a recent drug test, revoking her of her parental rights over Kellan and so Nikki believed that Dana would have kidnapped Kellan and may have accidentally killed him and killed herself. However, as the investigation dwells deeper, finds that this suicide thing looks more like as if someone staged it, prompting Nikki to investigate further, particularly the relationship with Dana and her sister Maggie…

Meanwhile, Caitlin, the journalist that Nikki doesn’t get along asks Nikki to investigate the missing boy case of Zach Reeves disappeared on the same day as Kellan was abducted. While Caitlin believes that the two cases are connected, Nikki doesn’t trust Caitlin due to their past turmoil relationship…

I read this book in one go! I must say, the author somehow knows how to capture the reader into the thrill ride. I was not disappointed with the second book. Coupled with the case, there’s much drama in the story, including Nikki’s complicated relationship with Rory and I was almost put on the edge of my seat, wondering if someone actually killed Dana, whether her sister was involved or if someone else was involved and those questions were nagging me as I read this book!!! The plot was unpredictable just like the previous books and there were twists and turns in the end.

This was a fast paced thriller that had twists and turns, that you wouldn’t want to put down and would read in one go!! It was that good! Worth five stars!

Lost Souls – ARC Book Review

Lost Souls: An absolutely gripping crime thriller with nail-biting suspense by [Chris Merritt]

Please forgive me for what I’m about to do…

Standing at the school gates, he waits until the last child leaves the safety of the playground. And then he follows at a distance, keeping to the shadows. Only he knows what’s going to happen next.

In a quiet church, on a busy London street, 12-year-old Donovan Blair is found dead. His hands are clasped together as if in prayer. Just hours ago, he was happily playing with his friends at school, but now his body is lifeless, and his killer is long gone.

Detective Dan Lockhart is working alone on his wife’s missing person’s case when he receives a call telling him to get to the crime scene at St Mary’s Church immediately.

Bringing in psychologist Dr Lexi Green to help profile the murderer, Dan is convinced that the killer has provided a clue by leaving the body in a prayer position, and Lexi agrees. As they try to get into the mind of the person responsible, another victim is found. A 13-year-old girl, left in a different church, posed in exactly the same way.

Fearing the murderer may already have another child in his sights, Dan and Lexi work together to establish links between the two deaths, and soon discover that not only were both children in care – they had attended the same school. And when it emerges that Lexi’s new boyfriend works there, things become difficult between her and Dan. How much can he tell Lexi about the case? And could she be at risk?

As Dan makes a breakthrough in the investigation, he receives devastating news about his wife, Jess. But with children’s lives at stake and Lexi in danger, Dan must put his personal emotions aside and chase the killer. Can he and Lexi work out who is behind the murders before another vulnerable child is taken?

This nail-biting crime book is perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan and Robert Dugoni. Once you pick up Lost Souls, you won’t be able to put it down!

He did AGAIN!

This is the second book I have read from the author and the third book of the Detective Lockhart and Green series. The story begins with a murder of a eleven-year-old, Donovan who is in the foster care system and who was found murdered inside a church with a Bible verse next to him. While finding out what happened to his wife, Detective Lockhart along with his MET team and Dr. Green sets out to find this deranged killer who is targeting children in the foster care system.

The story was well written, and again, I loved reading the parts, going into the minds of the killer (I know it’s creepy but wouldn’t it make the story juicier?) and the story was fast paced with thrills going on and twists and turns. Too many suspects with questionable backgrounds in the books that you don’t really know which one of those suspects can be the killer and that makes it more and more interesting! Not predictable which I like about the thrillers. Overall, it was a great thriller, unputdownable and fast paced. Worth five stars in my opinion!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is solely based on my honest opinion.

Chris Merritt

Hello! I’m a British author whose crime thrillers combine psychology, suspense, and characters you care about.

All my novels are set in London, where I live. My first trilogy starred Zac Boateng and Kat Jones, two detectives motivated by family, who tackle organised crime and police corruption. LAST WITNESS, the second Boateng and Jones book, reached #13 in the UK Kindle chart in 2019.

My second series features detective Dan Lockhart – an ex-soldier with a missing wife – and psychologist Dr Lexi Green, an American living in London. These novels are darker, more psychological serial-killer cases, with romantic relationships as a central theme.

I began writing fiction in 2014, after previous careers as a diplomat, based in Iraq and Jerusalem, and later as a psychologist working with victims and perpetrators of crime. I specialised in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which sparked my interest in telling stories about how people cope when faced with extreme adversity.

Now, I spend most of my time writing novels and drinking coffee while *thinking* about writing novels. When I’m not writing, I love climbing and playing basketball.

My Favorite Half Night Stand – Book Review

My Favourite Half-Night Stand: a hilarious romcom about the ups and downs of online dating by [Christina Lauren]

Swipe right on My Favourite Half-Night Stand – a funny, fresh romp into the ups and downs of online dating that’s sure to make you laugh out loud.

Millie Morris has always been one of the guys.
A professor at a respected university, she’s great at witty backchat but terrible at getting personal. Like her four best male friends, she’s perma-single. So when a routine university function turns into a black tie gala, they all make a pact to join an online dating service and find plus-ones. There’s just one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of their group, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest half-night of their lives together, before deciding the friendship is better off strictly platonic.

But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with dream dates, Millie’s profile attracts nothing but creeps. So she invents an alter ego in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person. But when Reid and her alter ego hit it off, Millie finds herself struggling to resist temptation – both online and off. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear – intimacy – or risk losing her best friend for ever.

I have always wanted to read Christina Lauren’s books and I got hold of this book!

Millie Morris is someone who has guy friends than girls as friends. She hangs out with her fellow colleagues at UCSB–Reid, Ed, Chris and Alex and Millie has a crush on Reid. One night, Reid and Millie sort of have a night stand and since then Millie has feelings towards Reid. Then an important event is coming up and the friends are looking for dates and soon try out online dating.

This story is told from the perspectives of Millie and Reid, though Millie is the main character here. The story is quite funny and is quick to read, which is the good thing in the book. The characters, particularly Millie and Reid were likable and though I am not much of a romance fanatic, I truly enjoyed reading this book. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book! Worth five stars!

The Moonglow Sisters – The Book Review

The Moonglow Sisters: A Novel by [Lori Wilde]

It’s Jill Shalvis meets Susan Mallery in this gorgeous novel by New York Times bestselling author Lori Wilde about three sisters, one small town, a wedding, and the summer that changes everything.

Welcome to Moonglow Cove, Texas, a place where your neighbors know your name and the gentle waves of the Gulf of Mexico lap lazily against the sands. It’s a magical spot, especially in the summertime…

Once the town was the home of the Clark sisters—brought up by their grandmother at the Moonglow Inn. Nicknamed “The Moonglow Sisters”, as children they were inseparable.  Then, a wedding-day betrayal tore them apart and they scattered across the globe and away from each other.  But the sisters have at last come home…

There’s Maddie: smart, sensible, and stubborn. Shelley, who ran off to find her bliss. And Gia, a free-spirit determined to keep the peace. It’s her impending wedding that keeps them together…but Gia has a secret, and when her sisters find out all heck is going to break loose!

The Moonglow Sisters continues Lori Wilde’s trademark storytelling to create an unforgettable novel of family, betrayal, love, and second chances.

No. of pages:- 397 pages

Genre:- Women’s Fiction

This book has been in my want to read book list for a while. So when I got the audio book version of this book on Scribd, I decided to give it a try.

Madison, Shelley and Gia Clark are known as Moonglow sisters and each of them have different personalities. Madison has become famous in her own show and live a glamorous life in Manhattan, Shelley after an incident with Madison moves to Costa Rica and Gia came back from Japan and is running a successful kite business in the hometown of Moonglow Cove, Texas. So when the girls’ grandmother wants the three sisters to be reunited a finish the quilt, the three sisters return back to Moonglow cove with secrets unveiled and emotions running high between the sisters…

Personally, I thought the novel was good. The narrator did a good job narrating and I was drawn into the story. The main theme of the story was five years ago, a betrayal had ruined the relationship between the sisters and their relationship got estranged as a result and the girl’s grandmother, who had brain surgery, her last wish was to see the girls rekindle their relationship by finishing up the quilt, which was originally a wedding gift for Madison. The author has beautifully outlined the estranged relationship between the sisters, particularly Madison and Shelley and the story was made somewhat realistic at those emotional turmoil each sister is facing. The story was based from the perspectives of the sister, Gia, Madison and Shelley. The only thing was, the sex scene was a bit weird and it was a bit predictable as what will happen in the end but nonetheless, it was easy and fun, perfect book to read during the summer.

Overall, I rate this book as four stars!

Gossip Girl Book Tag! (Originalish)

OK, I have started my physical music classes that I actually couldn’t finish reading and I have started writing a book and taking some teaching English classes!!! More about it later. Anyway, today, I decided that I will do a book tag.

Gossip Girl is one of my favorite TV shows–back in the U.S., I used to watch every Mondays on CW but then when I moved to Sri Lanka I couldn’t keep up with the show–but then Netflix came and I managed to finish off the season.

There are tons of Gossip Girl book tags around the blogs but honestly, I don’t remember the descriptions, questions and everything, so I decided to create my own version of Gossip Girl Book Tag!

In this book tag, I will select the main Gossip Girl characters and then select a character from the book you have read. Simple as that. Oh and then select a book also based on the character description.

No. of pages:- 300 pages

Date published:- 3rd February 2021

Genre:- Romance

Lexie is a stepmom to Connor and is kind of dating Theo, her boss at the Blue Parrot cafe and who happened to be Lexie’s husband. Daryl’s best friend and Connor’s godfather. Daryl is meanwhile in Japan with ambitions of opening up a Japanese restaurant in England and is training to be chef in Japan. Connor meanwhile is confused as he has both feelings towards girls and boys–Sophie and Oli. This book talks mainly about friendship, trust and unity among the family members and friends.

I really liked the plot, it was really enjoyable and the characters are all likable particularly, I really like Connor! He is so sweet and caring and I really do like the stepmom relationship between Lexie and Connor. I also like how romance developed between Lexie and Theo, who happens to be Connor’s godfather and Daryl, Lexie’s estranged husband. The writing was good, the author did a good job drawing the reader into the story and I do enjoyed this book. I do like the ending!

Overall, this was actually a good book! Worth four stars!

Mattie and Ashlee — The Girl at the Back of the Bus , ARC Book Review

The Girl at the Back of the Bus: An absolutely heart-wrenching historical novel by [Suzette D. Harrison]

I watched in awe as Miz Rosa stopped those men on the bus with her clear, calm “no” and I thought about that word. What if I said no? What if I refused to follow the path these White folks wanted for us? What if I kept this precious baby?

Montgomery, Alabama, 1955
On a cold December evening, Mattie Banks packs a suitcase and leaves her family home. Sixteen years old and pregnant, she has already made the mistake that will ruin her life and disgrace her widowed mother. Boarding the 2857 bus, she sits with her case on her lap, hoping that the driver will take her away from disaster. Instead, Mattie witnesses an act of bravery by a woman named Rosa Parks that changes everything. But as Mattie strives to turn her life around, the dangers that first led her to run are never far away. Forging a new life in a harsh world at constant risk of exposure, Mattie will need to fight to keep her baby safe.

Atlanta, Georgia, present day
Ashlee Turner is going home. Her relationship in ruins, her career held back by prejudice, she is returning to the family who have always been her rock. But Ashlee’s home is not the safe haven she remembers. Her beloved grandmother is dying and is determined to share her story before she leaves…

When Ashlee finds a stack of yellowing letters hidden in her nana’s closet, she can’t help the curiosity that compels her to read, and she uncovers an old secret that could wreak havoc on her already grieving family. As she tries to make sense of what she has learned, Ashlee faces a devastating choice: to protect her loved ones from the revelations, or honor her grandmother’s wishes and follow the path to the truth, no matter where it may lead.

For readers of The HelpOrphan Train and Before We Were Yours comes a beautiful and heartbreaking novel about redemption, family secrets and the spirit of survival found at the hardest time.

No. of pages:- 310 pages

Date published:- 8th February 2021

Genre:- Historical fiction

1956- Mattie is sixteen, colored and pregnant–with a White boy child. She also witnessed Rosa Parks getting arrested for sitting at the white section, one of the pivotal moments in the Civil Rights History. Though Mattie is pregnant she is actually very studious and wants to become a writer…
Present Day – Ashlee is a successful lawyer but loses her promotion in the law firm to someone else. She is also in a relationship with Brad, who is White. She then gets the news that her Nana is on the deathbed and then rushes to be by her.

This story really moved me. I have studied about the civil rights movement in the American history and so the story it self was emotional and gripping. I like the lifestyle Mattie Banks had back when they are segregated and Ashlee who is able to live in privilege. The story is well written and the author did a good job, catching the reader into the story. The characters to me are all likable, particularly Mattie. This story reminded me a little from the book The Help, where at that time, in the South, Black women worked as maids to the White people houses. Mattie’s mother worked as a maid in Stanton Household, a privileged white family and their son, Edward was the father of Mattie’s unborn child. I mean, I couldn’t literally believe that many years ago, these things happened in real life, the segregation, the racial injustice but thanks to civil rights, Black people are able to live freely though still there is some racial injustice. The story is so realistic that sometimes, you couldn’t believe that things happened in real life.

Overall I rate this book as five stars!

Genre:- Psychological/Domestic thriller

Karen Krupp seemed to be having a happy married life with Tom Krupp. But one day, while preparing dinner for her husband, she suddenly barged out of the house and had gone to a sketchy area and got herself into a car accident. Tom didn’t understand what and why Karen was at that questionable place and what she was really doing there. Then detectives come into the house and start asking questions about a murder that happened in an abandoned restaurant, the day Karen got into the accident and not far from where Karen had her accident…

How much do you know your wife?

The plot of the story was good. However, it was not fast paced like I expected it to be and not much of twists and turns you would expect in a thriller. The author’s writing was however simple and not very complicated which was actually a good thing. And the other thing it was, the story was way too predictable so for me, it was just an OK thriller, not a die hard thriller.

Overall I give this book as three stars
