Dear Miss Kopp – ARC Book Review

Split apart by the war effort, the indomitable Kopp sisters take on saboteurs and spies and stand up to the Army brass as they face the possibility that their life back home will never be the same.

The U.S. has finally entered World War I. Constance, the oldest of the Kopp sisters, is doing intelligence work on the home front for the Bureau of Investigation while youngest sister and aspiring actress, Fleurette, travels across the country entertaining troops with song and dance. Meanwhile, at an undisclosed location in France, Norma oversees her thwarted pigeon project for the Army Signal Corps. When her roommate, a nurse at the American field hospital, is accused of stealing essential medical supplies, the intrepid Norma is on the case to find the true culprit.

Determined to maintain their sometimes-scratchy family bonds across the miles, the far-flung sisters try to keep each other in their lives. But the world has irrevocably changed—when will the sisters be together again?

Told through letters, Dear Miss Kopp weaves the stories of real-life women a century ago, proving once again that “any novel that features the Kopp sisters is going to be a riotous, unforgettable adventure”

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC! This review is based on my honest opinion.

This is the sixth book of the Kopp sisters book series. I haven’t read the first five books so as a result, I was a bit confused about the characters but that was completely my fault. The story takes place when U.S. enters into First World War in 1918, just before the war ended. The story is based on real life events of Kopp sisters and is through the letters and telegrams exchanged between the sisters, friends and colleagues. Constance is set to find the spies and is working for Bureau of Investigations, Norma is sent to Langres, France during WWI and her roommate, Angie is a nurse working in the America hospital and there’s Fleurette and Bessie. Overall, I liked the style of the story telling which was actually unique way of telling a story and really enjoyed the bond between the sisters and friends.

This book worth five stars in my opinion and I am willing to read the previous books too!

Genre:- Psychological Thriller

With so much hype about this book, I really wanted to read this book and this had been in my want to read book list for so long. When I finally reached my hand, I was excited to read this book. But unfortunately, for me, I didn’t find this book much hype as it sounded.

Elizabeth Juliette Price, wanted to be known as Juliette joins the same airline company as her ex-boyfriend, Nate works in as a member of the cabin crew. The reason? She didn’t take it really well when Nate broke up with her and she wants to win him back by doing anything…

I actually liked the plot of the story–the plot is really good and as a reader, I would have loved to read a story about an obsessed girl stalking after her ex-boyfriend (and also other people). Even the cabin crew life (the author was actually a former flight attendant) was realistic as well. However, by the middle of the book, the story got a bit unbelievable, unrealistic and quiet crazy. I know there are those psycho type of girls but then again, come on, realistically, if the guy does not return back the feelings, the best thing is go let it go…but maybe it’s just me thinking. But I seriously believe that if you want to put it in a realistic way, Juliette is mentally disturbed and well, really a disturbing, delusional character. Even then, the writing didn’t help much either. In some places, there were too much repetition and it made the story a bit unnecessarily long. It was a bit boring and I had to skim through the pages to actually end the book. The ending was a bit confusing to me and not really good.

For some people, this book was good. But for me, it was an OK thriller–not fast paced, no twists and turns, no gasp out moments in the book–it’s just a simple thriller though I liked the plot that much. Worth three stars!

Poul Anderson Appreciation: Three Stars

There were some quotes from this book that were actually good.

“If you love someone, set them free.
If they come back, they’re yours.
If they don’t, make them.”

Which truly outline the whole story.

The Watchmaker of Dachau – ARC Book Review

The Watchmaker of Dachau: An absolutely heartbreaking World War 2 historical novel by [Carly Schabowski]

An unforgettable novel of human kindness, inspired by an incredible true story.

Snow falls and a woman prepares for a funeral she has long expected, yet hoped would never come. As she pats her hair and straightens her skirt, she tells herself this isn’t the first time she’s lost someone. Lifting a delicate, battered wristwatch from a little box on her dresser, she presses it to her cheek. Suddenly, she’s lost in memory…

January 1945, Dachau, Germany. As the train rattles through the bright, snowy Bavarian countryside, the still beauty outside the window hides the terrible scenes inside the train, where men and women are packed together, cold and terrified. Jewish watchmaker Isaac Schüller can’t understand how he came to be here, and is certain he won’t be leaving alive.

When the prisoners arrive at Dachau concentration camp, Isaac is unexpectedly pulled from the crowd and installed in the nearby household of Senior Officer Becher and his young, pretty, spoiled wife. With his talent for watchmaking, Isaac can be of use to Becher, but he knows his life is only worth something here as long as Becher needs his skills.

Anna Reznick waits table and washes linens for the Bechers, who dine and socialise and carry on as if they don’t constantly have death all around them. When she meets Isaac she knows she’s found a true friend, and maybe more. But Dachau is a dangerous place where you can never take love for granted, and when Isaac discovers a heartbreaking secret hidden in the depths of Becher’s workshop, it will put Anna and Issac in terrible danger…

A gorgeously emotional and tear-jerking read set during World War Two. Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of AuschwitzWe Were the Lucky Ones and The Alice Network.

Thank You Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC! This review is based on my honest opinion.

Based on true events and set during the Holocaust and WWII, the story tells about a man named Isaac who arrives to Dachau Concentration Camp. The camp leader, Herr Berscher realizes that Isaac is a watchmaker and asks Isaac to repair the grandfather clock which was gifted by the Fuhrer and which no one was able to repair. Isaac managed to repair the clock impressing Berscher thus he starts giving more items for Isaac to repair by giving him a garden shed as his workshop, away from the atrocious working conditions at the camp. In the same house, Isaac befriends Anna, who is also the prisoner at the camp working in the kitchen at Berscher’s house, Greta, a friendly German who feeds Isaac and Anna. Levi, the gardener and Friedrich who is the young son of Herr and Frau Berscher who befriends both Isaac and Anna. Isaac then comes across bundles of letters written by someone named J.A.L who used to be the gardener at the Berscher household.

As like most Holocaust books, this story was emotional and sad at the same time. The fact that these events happened in real life was too much to bear to read–the atrocities at the camp, the hunger and starvation, the brutal conditions at the camp was too horrifying but one should never forget that these things happened in real life. The author has done so much research that she has made the book as realistic as possible. The ending was sad and the author did a good job, drawing the reader into the story. I also like how the author balanced out the characters–the good Germans like Greta who tried to feed Anna and Isaac as much as she can and Friedrich who doesn’t care to develop friendship with the Jews, since most of the Holocaust books are only one sided. As such, many of the characters in the book are likable. Some of the parts in the story was too emotional to read and at times, particularly towards the end, I cried at some parts…

Overall, this is an emotional book to read, unputdownable and that will make you cry till the end and you didn’t want to miss this story about friendship and courage at the will to survive the horrid conditions. Worth five stars!

Thank You Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC! This review is based on my honest opinion.

This is the new Detective Amanda Steele series and this is the first time I have read from this author. Detective Amanda Steele used to have a happy family until a car accident caused the deaths of her six year old Lindsey and her husband Kevin. The driver who caused the accident was a man named Palmer who was sentenced to some jail time. Now Palmer is released and soon Steele was called to investigate the murder of Palmer, who was found murdered in the motel room he was renting out. With struggles of personal emotions as well as on pursuit of catching the killer, realizing Palmer’s murder has connections with two cold cases, Detective Steele along with her partner has to find the culprit soon before it’s too late.

The story started a little slow to me but soon, it picked up its momentum and became fast paced with some twists and turns. I like how the author portrayed Amanda Steele’s personal struggles as she tried to solve the Palmer murder case even though she thinks he actually deserved it. Some parts of the book were a bit boring but towards the end, when they were close to catching the killer, the story got interesting and intriguing. The ending was a bit emotional but it was good. Overall, it was a good thriller and I am looking forward to read the series.

Worth four stars!

The Night Swim – Book Review

The Night Swim: Official UK Edition by [Megan Goldin]

In The Night Swim, a new thriller from Megan Goldin, author of the “gripping and unforgettable” (Harlen Coben)The Escape Room,a true-crime podcast host covering a controversial trial finds herself drawn deep into a small town’s dark past and a brutal crime that took place there years before.

Ever since her true-crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall has become a household name – and the last hope for people seeking justice. But she’s used to being recognised for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help.

The new season of Rachel’s podcast has brought her to a small town being torn apart by a devastating rape trial. A local golden boy, a swimmer destined for Olympic greatness, has been accused of raping the beloved granddaughter of the police chief. Under pressure to make Season 3 a success, Rachel throws herself into her investigation – but the mysterious letters keep coming. Someone is following her, and she won’t stop until Rachel finds out what happened to her sister twenty-five years ago. Officially, Jenny Stills tragically drowned, but the letters insist she was murdered – and when Rachel starts asking questions, nobody in town wants to answer. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers startling connections between the two cases – and a revelation that will change the course of the trial and the lives of everyone involved.

Electrifying and propulsive,The Night Swim asks: What is the price of a reputation? Can a small town ever right the wrongs of its past? And what really happened to Jenny?

No. of pages:- 353 pages

Genre:- Psychological Thriller

I have always wanted to read Megan Goldin’s books for a long time, starting with the Escape Room. But I got this book at a discounted price on Amazon and I couldn’t wait to read this book.

I actually enjoyed reading this book! Rachel is a podcaster and is running a successful podcast Guilty or Not Guilty. In her season 3, she covers the case of a rape, a teenage girl raped by an emerging swimmer in a small town called Neapolis. While covering the case, she gets a letter from a girl named Hannah, who asked Rachel to cover the story about her sister, Jenny Stills who was drowned twenty five years ago. Even though the case was closed as drowning, Hannah believes Jenny was murdered. And as Rachel investigating, she realized the two cases were similar to each other.

I was sooo hooked into the story that I simply couldn’t put the book down! It had some twists and turns and also fast paced. The story is told from Rachel’s perspective and then her podcast show and Hannah’s perspective about what really happened on the night Jenny was murdered. The writing was so intense and so good that I couldn’t wait to find what is going to happen next! The court case was a bit boring but then again, the author did a good job making the story as realistic as possible. It was really a good, unputdownable thriller. I give this book five stars! Truly enjoyed reading this book, the characters are likable except for the bad ones. The part where what happened to Jenny was really sad that I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her, even though the character is fictional.

Overall, I give this book a five star rating!

From the Amazon bestselling author of Hide Away comes the gripping second installment of the Rachel Marin Thriller series.

Rachel Marin is in a good place. After years of struggle, the single mother has found both a stable, loving relationship and a new purpose: putting her investigative skills to work solving crimes for the local PD. No. of pages:- 358 pages

Date published:- will be published on 12th January 2021

Genre:- Thriller

Thank You Netgalley and the publisher for granting me the ARC! This review is based on my honest opinion only.

This is the second book of the Rachel Marin series but this is the first time I have been reading the thriller from this author. The story begins with Matthew Linklater, a teacher at Ashby was brutally murdered by two strangers. Before his murder, he had sent an email to Rachel Marin. Rachel Marin is not a cop but using her skills and intelligence, she works for them and have a close relationship with Detectives Serrano and Tally. As they investigate further into Linklater’s murder, they find a small cult, where a high schooler named Raddock is recruiting young boys into a group. Soon, Rachel’s son also gets involved into that group and while trying to find the killer, Rachel would do anything to prevent her son from getting into trouble.

This story was actually good from start to finish! I really enjoyed reading the book–the writing was good and the author did a good job of hooking the reader into the story. It is a fast paced thriller though you don’t get much twists and turns as expected in a thriller book. Nonetheless, it was actually unputdownable and the characters are also somewhat likable and related, particularly Rachel. Overall, it was a good thriller worth four stars!

Thank You Netgalley and the Bookouture for the ARC of this book! This review is based on my honest opinion.

This is the second book of the Detective Mackenzie Price series and although I haven’t read the first book yet, this book was actually really good. The story starts with Detective Mackenzie Price meeting her father, the man she thought was dead many years ago and buried in the backyard of her childhood house. Then after the corruption faced by the Lakemore PD and trying to move on, two bodies of women were found in an ice park in Lakemore–the women looked identical to each other. and one of these women is identified as Katy, an activist in Lakemore. The second victim, who looked very much like Katy seemed to have undergone plastic surgery to look much like her. Detective Price must solve the cases while solving her personal issues with her father.

The writing was really good and I was hooked into the story!!! It was intriguing, interesting and unputdownable with lot of twists and unexpected turns you would never expect!!! The ending left me breathless that I was a bit shocked and was actually unexpected. Kudos to the author, who did a good job keeping the reader hooked into the story! I really like Ruhi Chaudary’s writing–the descriptions of the places made me imagine as a reader that I was with Mackenzie Price and the scientific details of the the plastic surgery was realistic and accurate. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Overall, I rate this book as five stars!
