Hey all! Just finished with my most wanted to read book, which I have wanted to read for the past two years–The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides! Here’s my review

The Silent Patient: The Richard and Judy bookclub pick and Sunday Times Bestseller by [Alex Michaelides]

Alicia Berenson lived a seemingly perfect life until one day six years ago.

When she shot her husband in the head five times.

Since then she hasn’t spoken a single word.

It’s time to find out why.

Alex Michaelides

Alex Michaelides was born in Cyprus to a Greek-Cypriot father and English mother. He has a MA in English Literature from Cambridge University and a MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. The Silent Patient is his first novel.

The Silent Patient book is the debut book by the author Alex Michaelides. This book had been in my want to read book list but I manage to get this book finally on Kindle!!!! So I am excited to read the book and I must say, I was not to be disappointed.

Alicia Berenson was guilty of murdering her husband, Gabriel. Gabriel was found tied on a chair, bounded and he was shot six times on the face. Ever since then Alicia Berenson had remained silent, refusing to talk about the crime and was put into the psychiatric unit of The Grove. Theo Faber is the new psychiatrist at the Grove and he was determined to make Alicia talk, despite the fact that many of his colleagues are asking him to give up. He wanted Alicia to talk of what really happened that night. And why was Alicia refusing to talk? And why is Theo so determined to make her talk? I feel like this story is more like a cat and mouse chase, demanding answers and truth.

I must say, this is one of the best psychological thriller I have read in a while! The story is intense, gripping and I was so hooked into the story that I couldn’t simply put it down! The story is told from the perspective of Theo and some extracts from Alicia’s diary so we get to know more about both of them. It is also interesting that both Theo and Alicia almost shared the similar family backgrounds–both came from dysfunctional families and both endured childhood abuses. I also like the style of writing as well and the story is somewhat realistic. There were twists and turns in each of the chapter but the ending was the most unexpected twist that I had read that I am still recovering from that twist!!!

Overall, I had a good rollercoaster ride with this book. The book is one of the best psychological thrillers I have read, in my opinion, unputdownable, with lots of unexpected twists and turns that will keep you up at night. I was so hooked into the story that I kept reading and reading, wondering what is going to happen next so over all, the author did a good job of making the reader feel like they are at the edge of the seat, waiting for something to happen!

The ending was good–a bit confusing however but to me, it was good, unexpected good.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, twisty psychological thriller. Worth five stars!

JA Andrews is the author of dark psychological thrillers with novels published by Hera. Mummy’s Boy, is his 2020 debut with a further dark story due for release later in the year. As well as writing, JA Andrews enjoys reading a mix of genres, watching various reality TV and spending time with family and friends. Also a member of the Crime Writers Association, and can be found online in a few places:

First of all, thank you Netgalley and Hera for the ARC!

In a nutshell, Jenny Clifton, the wife of Michael Clifton seems to trust her husband so much that she let him manage the finances around the house, after all he is the accountant. He works late at night so he could get extra money to give comfort life to Jenny and their three year old son Daniel. But one night, the day when Jenny and Michael argued and Michael left the house, Michael died in a car accident. The only witness to the accident was a man named Gary who had been beside Michael at the time of the accident.

Jenny was feeling guilty about the Michael’s death and soon she gets letters from the bank and credit card bills, saying the payment is overdue. Jenny thought her husband was handling the finances and why did her husband lied to her? Gary then slowly joins into the part of Jenny’s circle with the interest of becoming friends with her or is their another intention?

The story was good–there was thrill in the story. Most of the story was told from the perspective of Jenny. Throughout the story, we are wondering what was Michael’s secret, why did he have so much of debts and to whom was he working for actually? That kind of made the reader interested as to what Michael was really up to. The story was a bit slow paced, sometimes it was a bit boring, especially towards the middle. The characters in the book are not that likable in my opinion. The story to me was a bit predictable as I knew that this might happen in the end. However, the emotions and feelings that Jenny was going through as a wife was realistic to me and her relationship with her mother-in-law Donna was also realistic as both are struggling and competing each other as what is best for Michael’s funeral and who will look after Daniel properly.

Overall, this is actually a quick read–for anyone who want to read a quick read thriller, this book is perfect. Worth three stars in my opinion! If you are interested you can pre-order your copy now on Amazon!

Poul Anderson Appreciation: Three Stars

Book Review The Perfect Hideaway – Alys Murray

Hey all! Just finished the book, The Perfect Hideaway by Alys Murray.

The Perfect Hideaway: A completely gorgeous and uplifting feel-good romance by [Alys Murray]

Annie Martin is thrilled to have moved from the hectic buzz of L.A. to the small town of Hillsboro, Northern California, where the most happening bar only plays honky-tonk and nowhere does a good matcha latte. But the best thing about Hillsboro? The Anderson sisters. At their noisy family dinners, Annie can almost forget the mistakes she made back in the city, trying to fit in.

Annie has repaid the sisters’ friendship with some obvious-but-effective matchmaking and now there’s only one Anderson still looking for love. But Rose is surprisingly prickly about an enforced happy-ever-after, and when a meticulously planned meet-cute ends drenched in the town fountain, Annie realizes this project calls for someone with a deeper knowledge of the Hillsboro bachelors.

Local reporter and all-around grouch George Barnett has been a thorn in Annie’s side since she came to town. He knows all too well that everyone has secrets and he thinks the story of why social media darling Annie Martin swapped stilettos for sneakers might be the scoop that makes his career. Annie is sure her skeletons are under triple lock and key, so she offers him an exclusive, if he’ll help her find a match for Rose.

But the more George and Annie try to control the love lives around them, the less they’re able to sway their own hearts. As Annie’s infectious laugh begins to bring down George’s barrier of surliness, can he open his heart and let her in for real? And can Annie be brave enough to trust the man who could be her future, with the secrets of her past?

A heart-warming story of friendship and finding love in the most unlikely of places, fans of Robyn Carr, Debbie Macomber and Carolyn Brown will adore The Perfect Hideaway.

She loves black and white movies, baseball games that go into extra innings, and reminding people like Michael Bay has two films in The Criterion Collection.

First of all, thank you so much Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy of this book!

This is the first book I have read from this author and the third book of the sister series, written by the same author. This book is not a continuation of the series so that is actually good news!

Annie Martin who is an Instagram celebrity moved from L.A. to Hillsboro and immediately becomes friends with the Anderson sisters. Hanging out with Anderson sisters makes Annie forget about the her issues she had back in L.A. When her brother Luke marries Harper Anderson and then sets off to start a new life, Annie feels lonely. But Annie wants to make a matchmaking service, finding a suitable guy for the only single Anderson sister in the family, Rose. And she gets an unexpected help from a handsome and gruffy reporter, George Barnett on one condition–that George will write an article about her brother Luke. But George was looking for some sort of scandal that would likely destroy Luke’s career…

Annie and George cannot stand each other but eventually, a romance soon develops between them.

This is actually a very charming and cheesy romantic book I have read. The writing was good, the author did a good job, making the reader engage into the story. The characters in the book are all likable and the plot line of the story is good. I really like how the two people, who can’t stand each other would eventually become friends and later on turn into lovers. However, the ending was way too predictable.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book–the haters eventually turning into lovers is one fascinating book to read. This book is enjoyable to read, kept me hooked into the book until the end and overall really enjoyed the book! The Perfect Hideaway will be released on Amazon on August 14th 2020 so don’t forget to pre-order your copy now!

Some Like It Greek – Book Review

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC of Some Like It Greek by Sue Roberts! Here is my honest review on this book

Some Like It Greek: A completely laugh-out-loud romantic comedy by [Sue Roberts]

There’s nothing like a summer escape. A sun-kissed story about living life to the full.

In the month from hell, incurable optimist Anna has lost her father and her job, and her trademark smile is dimming. Clearing out her dad’s house, she discovers a postcard of a beautiful sandy beach and a map with a route plotted to the Greek island of Kefalonia. With an empty summer stretching ahead, Anna’s eyes stray to her father’s old camper van. Next thing she knows, she’s hitting the road with friend Demi in tow, on a course from Salford to Skala!

Over one unforgettable summer, Anna and Demi make their rickety way along the sparkling Mediterranean coast, the hot sun shining down on their frequent mishaps with cheerful local characters. It’s the trip of a lifetime, and the scent of lemons in the air – as well as an unexpected romance – are just what Anna needs to awaken her inner Greek goddess.

But there are big surprises in store when they arrive at the island paradise, which could change both women’s lives forever. And as summer comes to an end, Anna has to decide whether she has had enough of the Greek life, or whether this is only just the beginning…

A joyful, hilarious summer read, perfect for fans of Carole Matthews, Jenny Colgan and Sophie Kinsella.

Genre:- Greek Travel/Romantic Comedy

This is the first book I have read from this author and thank you Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book! This is the honest review totally based on my opinion.

In a month, Anna loses everything–first her relationship with Joel, then she lost her father from a heart attack and then she lost her job. It seems to Anna that she is living in hell. While clearing out her father’s house, Anna discovers a stack of photos and postcards belonging to her father, when her father was young and was travelling to the Greek Island of Kefalonia. Using the money of redundancy she got from the bank, she decides to embark on a road trip to Kefalonia to reminisce her father’s memories and she is accompanied by Demi, a fellow friendly neighbor who is also Greek and who seems to be having some second thoughts about going to Greece. Towards their journey, they encounter surprises, making new friends, even finding some romance and also some fun!

This book is actually fun and quick to read. I have never been to Greece so reading this book, made me think that I was in Greece with Anna and Demi. The story is told from the complete perspective of Anna so as a reader you get to enjoy the Greek culture, Greek food (of course I have tried Greek food) and of course the perfect sceneries and descriptions given by the author, as I picture the sandy warm beaches and places around the island of Kefalonia. I just like how warm and friendly this book is and reading this book made me wish I can go to Greece too! Even the descriptions of the road trip, as both Anna and Demi go through France then through the Swiss Alps and Italy also created the image in my head as what the scenery and places look like. Truly enjoyed reading the book. Also the characters are likable as well as both Anna and Demi are perfect duo, encouraging each other throughout their journey and supporting each other.

This book is a heartwarming book to read, filled with laughter and romance, a perfect read for summer. Oh not to mention this book will take you to the journey to Greece along with Anna and Demi. Totally worth reading and is also a quick read. Worth five stars! This book will be released on 21st August so pre-order your copy now on Amazon!

The Somerset Girls – Book Review

Hey all! Another second book review of the week! This time it is Somerset Girls by Lori Foster

The Somerset Girls

No one knows you quite like a sister…

Summer in Sunset, Kentucky, means long, hot days—and sometimes surprising new beginnings. Through it all, the ties of sisterhood will be there, guiding Autumn and Ember to the lives, and loves, they need…

When they’re running the animal-rescue farm they inherited from their grandparents, Autumn and Ember Somerset are perfectly in sync. At all other times, not so much. Dependable Autumn would rather curl up with a good book than paint the town red with Ember. After the disaster that was Autumn’s last relationship, it’s pure self-protection. But when her high school crush comes back to town with his adorable young daughter, igniting memories best left forgotten, there’s only one person Autumn can turn to…

Beneath Ember’s free-spirited facade is a layer of deep hurt. She’ll gladly nudge Autumn toward a second chance. But risk her own heart? Not likely. The closer Autumn gets to her own happily-ever-after, the more Ember wonders what she might be missing—and if it isn’t her time to be bold, too.

I found this book as an audio book on Scribd and so decided to try out this one.

This story is set in a small town called Sunset, Kentucky, set during the summer. This is a story about two sisters, Autumn and Ember who is running the animal rescue shelter which they have inherited from their grandparents. Autumn would love to snuggle up to bed with a book than pain the town in red with Ember. But the tie between the two sisters is strong and they seemed to be supporting to each other even during the hard times.

Then the story starts with Autumn’s high school crush returning back to the town with his adorable young daughter thus igniting the past memories and feelings, when Autumn was asked by him to redecorate his daughter’s room. Then there is the growing romance between Ember and Mark who works in the barn with the sisters.

So the writing was engaging and I do really like the sister bond that both Autumn and Ember shared with each other. Even the characters are likable as well. Autumn is somewhat an introvert type who would read a good book rather than partying but when she meets her crush, her life changed a little and she was afraid of getting into a relationship after her ex betrayed her. Ember is going through some emotions after losing her baby and Autumn is helping Ember to cope up with the emotions. I also like the growing relationship between Autumn and Sadie, who is Tash’s younger daughter and the growing romantic relationship between Autumn and Tash and Mark and Ember. The writing was engaging and since I listened to the audio, the narrator did a good job reading it. The descriptions were realistic and vivid and overall, and the author did a good job, getting the reader engaged into the story.

For those who love a good summer cheesy romantic novel, this book will be a perfect option for you all! Worth five stars!

Mexican Gothic- Book Review

Just finished with the book, The Mexican Gothic book by Silvia Moreno Garcia and here is my review! First review of the month of August!

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

When glamorous socialite Noemí Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it’s clear something is desperately amiss. Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her.
Noemí’s chic gowns and perfect lipstick are more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing, but she immediately heads to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, determined to discover what is so affecting her cousin.

Tough and smart, she possesses an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to leave this enigmatic house behind . . .

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

That line literally drew me attention and I had been dying to read this book since then! Set somewhere in 1950’s, Noemi Taboada gets a frantic letter from her cousin, Catalina with those above words. Concerned and worried about her cousin’s state, Noemi’s father sent Noemi to the “High Place” located in a very remote countryside place, far from the city. The mansion, owned by Doyles and Catalina is married to Virgil Doyle who seemed to be a sinister man and who along with a woman named Florence doesn’t really want Noemi to meet Catalina much. But a young man named Francis befriends with Noemi and Noemi discovers something sinister about the mansion in general that seems to be haunted with an age long history and revenge.

Here’s the thing–the story was fantastic!!! Though the first few were a bit boring, it got better and interesting until towards the end. It was more like a scene from a horror movie–about the certain eugenic system and some rituals that is carried out in the house. While reading the book, I did feel as if I was in some part of the horror movie. The descriptions, given by the author was fantastic, the decaying of the house, with molds growing around the house, the decaying body of an old man named Howard Doyle who seemed to be the patriarch of the Doyle family, the descriptions of the cemetery that makes you feel like you are also in that cemetery with Noemi and the certain legend surrounding the house that craves you to read more, wondering what that legend really was! And the part about the mushrooms and fungi was a bit creepy to read. The writing was fantastic and the author did a good job making the reader engaged into the story. The story despite being engaging is not very realistic however. More like a thing where you live in the fantasy part of the world. Oh another thing–I like the book cover–it’s so revealing!

For those who love to read a good horror movie, I recommend this book. Mexican Gothic will truly make you engage into the story and will sweep you into the 1950’s Mexico with a hint of gothic horror and ritual. Worth four stars!

Another Woman's Child: An utterly heartbreaking and emotional page-turner by [Kerry Fisher]

Could you take in your best friend’s child, even if it risked destroying your own family?

Jo had thought that her life – and her heart – was full. With a busy job, a husband and a teenage daughter who is going off the rails, keeping her life running smoothly had already felt hard enough.

But now Jo sits at the funeral of her best friend Ginny, crushed by the loss of a friendship that had endured for thirty years: from college and their first days at work through to settling down and raising their own children.

Against her husband’s wishes, Jo has made a life-changing decision: to take in Ginny’s teenage son Victor and raise him as her own. Despite her misgivings, Jo feels she had no choice: Ginny was a single parent and Victor had no other family who could take care of him.

But Victor’s arrival is about to break open the fragile cracks that were already forming on the surface of Jo’s family life and in her small rural community… and expose a secret that has remained hidden for many years, with devastating consequences.

From the bestselling author of The Silent Wife and The Woman I Was Before, Another Woman’s Child is an unputdownable and heartbreaking read about the secrets we keep from our families, and the sacrifices we are willing to make for those we love. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Liane Moriarty and Diane Chamberlain.

I got this free copy from Netgalley and Bookouture and I would like to thank them for providing me with a copy!

Jo has a busy family life–with a busy job and a rebellious daughter that she simply cannot control. But when her best friend, Ginny dies, her last wish was for Jo to look after Ginny’s son, Victor and raise him as her own. Despite Jo’s misgivings, she hesitantly accepts and takes in Victor into her family, thus introducing him into a small community. But Victor’s arrival soon develops fragile cracks in Jo’s family and also the small community. And a secret that had been hidden for many years…

I really like the book. The situation that the book was written is realistic. Victor, being half black was immediately turned into a victim of severe accusations like giving drugs to “perfect daughters” and misleading them which sadly is happening in the real world right now, despite the fact that Victor is actually an innocent boy. The teenage rebellion is also realistic, the girls who want to please their parents by getting good grades and going into Oxford or Cambridge though in secret they were partying and taking drugs. The situation that the book was based on was realistic which I really liked about it. The writing was good, though at times, not very engaging but it was also a bit emotional to read.

Overall, it is a good emotional book to read. Worth three stars. This book will be released on 5th August so you can preorder your copy now on Amazon!

This is the first book I have read from this author.

Cassie is suffering from the death of her son, Josh, who apparently committed suicide by jumping in front of the incoming train. She and her husband, Adam are overcoming with grief at the death of Josh, until a mysterious girl named Kim turns up, with a baby, named Samuel, saying that she was the girlfriend of Josh and that Samuel is his baby. Both Cassie and Adam are coming into terms of Josh having a baby with a girl named Kim who they had no clue about. The baby is a mirror image of Josh but both Cassie and Adam are questioning about Kim’s connection with Josh. And after Kim turned up, Cassie receives anonymous text messages, threatening to reveal a secret, a secret that Cassie had buried years ago and if that secret was revealed, her marriage to Adam might come to an end and everything will be ruined.

I have to say that the plot line is really good and it got more interesting and intriguing with unexpected twists starting from the middle of the book towards the end. The ending of the book was really unexpected, did not really see that ending coming and also the connection!!!! I must say, towards the end, I felt more like I was in some part of a hit and run chase in a criminal show. Too much drama in the book, which was a bit OK to the plot of the story, considering what Cassie, as a mother is going through. Some parts of the story was however not very realistic and some parts were realistic.

The writing was flowing and was written in simple and understandable way and also it was actually a quick read so for those who are looking for fast read, this book might be a good choice. However, I think I didn’t really fancy the characters much. There were no characters that I could actually feel connection to and I didn’t really feel any of the characters.

Overall, this a nice thriller that will keep you are the edge of your seat. A perfect summer read for people looking to read a good thriller!

This book will be released on 3rd August 2019 and can check out a copy on Amazon and pre-order now! Overall this book worth four stars!

First of all, many thanks to Netgalley for this advanced copy.

Charlotte “Charlie” and her long time boyfriend, Matt are planning for their wedding and she is excited to spend their three week honeymoon in Japan! But then, their wedding is cancelled when Matt starts having second thoughts. They cannot cancel the honeymoon either that Charlie end up going to this Honeymoon tour to Japan–alone to fulfill her childhood wish.

Let me outline the ones I like about the book.

  • Having lived in Japan during the early days of my childhood and my two years ago visit to Japan, reading this book brought me some fresh memories of Japan. Of course, I have not visited Hiroshima or Nagano or the islands around Japan but still brought me memories of my childhood in Japan, particularly the part about Disneyland, which I have visited million times, when I was living in Japan..
  • The middle parts till the end was based on Japan itself–the vivid descriptions of the places particularly when Charlie goes hiking and visiting Kyoto makes the reader feel as if they are in Japan. That they too are in enjoying this adventure with Charlie. The description of kayaking, snorkeling and hiking in the woods also made the reader feel as if they are also doing these activities with Charlie.
  • I also like how the author has explained the Japanese culture in detail, so the reader can get to know more about the Japanese culture. Particularly about the tea ceremony and kabuki performance. I know not many people are familiar with the Japanese culture so I am glad that the author has written it in detail and the reader can experience the culture without having going to Japan.
  • The story was funny in some ways, as Charlie is trying to learn some Japanese phrases for her to get around the place.
  • Some parts of the story was emotional and heartbreaking, particularly the parts when Charlie is feeling lonely during the honeymoon tour, though in the end, she does her solo adventure around Japan. I also can understand Charlie’s feelings in the book.

Now about the things I didn’t like

  • The book was well written but I kind of wished there was an epilogue after the chapter was over–like maybe fast forward to six months or a year later with Charlie working in the travel magazine. I would be curious as a reader to know what Charlie is planning to do, once she returned back from England.
  • I felt some parts are bit overexaggerated, but maybe that’s just me.
  • To me, some parts of the chapters were a bit confusing–one minute Charlie was in another place and all of a sudden, she seems to be in a different place. I don’t know whether it was a typing error but that made me confused at times.

Overall, this is a good book, adventurous and for those who never been to Japan, this book might be perfect for you! Worth four stars!
