Small Town Secrets – ARC Book Review

Small Town Secrets: A heartwarming and uplifting women’s fiction novel (Fortune Springs) by [Alys Murray]

“Young women needed for the Fortune Springs Town Improvement Initiative. One year’s room and board provided.”

I should have known it was too good to be true when I first saw the ad. It turns out that Fortune Springs, Colorado isn’t just a one-horse town, it’s a two-woman one, and this is their attempt to keep the community alive. I want to say the scheme is ridiculous, totally outdated, but I’m carrying everything I own in my canvas backpack and the greyhound I stepped off this morning is long gone. If this is my chance at a fresh start, I’d better grab it with both hands.

I know I should feel guilty about pretending to be a lonely heart willing to help repopulate this rural logging town, but all I feel is relief at having escaped the apartment in Savannah. And after all, what’s one more secret to add to the pile? I only hope I’ve hidden my tracks well enough, and that the kind Fortune Springs locals who’ve opened their doors to me will never find out what made me run away in the first place…

An emotional, gripping story full of family drama. Fans of Carolyn Brown, Robyn Carr and Debbie Macomber will be hooked.

“Young women needed for the Fortune Springs Town Improvement Initiative. One year’s room and board provided.”

That’s how the story starts with Virginia Bessel moving into Fortune Springs to start a new life. She befriends Calla and her granddaughter, Willa and lives with them in the Bride House. Then she meets a handsome firefighter, Owen–initially, they first didn’t get along and soon sparks start flying between them…

I had enjoyed reading Alys Murray’s books and so I was excited to read this one. Like all her book, this story was engaging and also actually easy to read and quick to read as well. The characters to me are all likable, particularly I like little Willa and how Virginia quickly becomes friends with Willa. This was actually more like a Hallmark movie with Virginia leaving behind bad memories and wanting to start a new life in Fortune Springs, Colorado and then meeting a handsome man and falling in love with him.

Overall, to me, this wasn’t a bad book–it was good. The story was nothing new but nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this book and read in one go. Worth four stars in my opinion!

I love watching horror movies and so I was thrilled when I got a chance to read a horror book!

Jessica gets a new job as a nurse in an asylum called Redwood Asylum for criminally insane. On the second day of her work, she comes across a man in 5B who has been locked for years and who latches on Jessica in an unsettling way. And soon, Jessica is haunted by some children and she is determined to find secrets at the asylum…

To my utter surprise, this story was actually good! The writing was great and it was actually as if I was watching a horror movies. We know that the main character Jessica is somewhat an unreliable, dysfunctional character with something to hide to work in a place like Redwood Asylum. I was so engrossed into the book that I didn’t even realize until I came to the end that I have finished the book! It was really good! It was engaging, and at times, there were some horror in the book as expected. The ending was somewhat unexpected, as you are rooting to the main character, wondering what will happen to the main character soon.

I really enjoyed this book–an unputdownable horror book worth five stars!

Kate is still trying to get on with her son’s death, Michael, who died six years ago in a drowning accident. When Kate’s mother gets sick, Kate moves to her mother’s house and discovers a diary written by Michael. Then she discovers a deep dark secret in her own son’s diary that Kate suspects that her son’s death is more than just an accident.

This was actually a good book with a good plot. The emotions Kate is going through as a mother is real and raw. The characters are good, as the story is told from the perspective of Kate. I was actually glued to the story, wanting to know, who this Diving Fish really is and I couldn’t wait to read the ending. The author did a good job getting the reader hooked into the story! This was also quite unputdownable. There were no surprising twists or turns but nonetheless, it was actually a good thriller book. I also like how Kate would do anything, to find the real identity of who the Diving Fish, who supposedly had a relationship with Michael, even bribing a girl. It was intense, particularly the ending. I was holding my breath as I read the story. The only problem was, the story was a bit predictable and there were some unnecessary side story that was irrelevant to the story. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book.

Thank you Netgalley and Avon publishers for granting me this ARC. This review is based on my honest opinion. Worth four stars!

Wrong Family – Book Review

The Wrong Family: A Thriller by [Tarryn Fisher]

Have you ever been wrong about someone? Juno was wrong about Winnie Crouch. Before moving in with the Crouch family, Juno thought Winnie and her husband, Nigel, had the perfect marriage, the perfect son—the perfect life. Only now that she’s living in their beautiful house, she sees the cracks in the crumbling facade are too deep to ignore. Still, she isn’t one to judge. After her grim diagnosis, the retired therapist simply wants a place to live out the rest of her days in peace. But that peace is shattered the day Juno overhears a chilling conversation between Winnie and Nigel… She shouldn’t get involved. She really shouldn’t. But this could be her chance to make a few things right. Because if you thought Juno didn’t have a secret of her own, then you were wrong about her, too. From the wickedly dark mind of bestselling author Tarryn Fisher, The Wrong Family is a taut new thriller that’s riddled with twists in all the right places.

No. of pages:- 259 pages

Genre:- Thriller

After reading The Wives by Tarryn Fisher, I immediately wanted to read her books and was thrilled when I did get a chance to access the audiobook of her second book, The Wrong Family.

Did I expect the similar hype I found in the Wives? I did. Did this book disappoint me? Sadly yes.

If you have read my review on the Wives, I truly enjoyed reading the book as it was filled with twists, drama and turns and an ending that was totally unexpected. So I did expect the similar plot with her second book as well. Unfortunately, I did not.

Juno, a former therapist is homeless and is living in the basement of a house of Crouch family–Winnie, Nigel and their son Samuel. Then Juno discovers a deep dark secret that would actually ruin the story.

The plot was good, but was a bit unrealistic to me. The ending was filled with drama that I felt like I was watching some crime show on TV!!! The story is based on perspectives of Winnie and Juno so you know what the two characters are going through and thinking about. The characters are boring to me, plot also seemed to get boring except towards the end and overall, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed her other book, The Wives.

Overall, I rate this book as two stars!

Lady Clementine, an aspiring fashion designer moves from London to a Scottish castle, a castle inherited by her sister Ari. She was in charge of taking care of the castle and realize that the castle needs repair. She got on wrong foot with Ottoline “Otto” who is the caretaker of the castle. As Clem gets used to the life of countryside, she soon develops friendship with Otto and then stumble a secret she found in the attic.

This was actually an OK romantic book to me. First of all, I really liked the cover–the book cover is so cute and pretty that whoever designed the book did a good job attracting the reader. However, I wasn’t that much into the story. There were some funny parts but then I felt it was a bit boring to me. However, I did like the ending a bit, how Clem and Otto develop their friendship with each other and a developing romance between Clem and Rory. The writing was OK.

Overall this book worth three stars.

Not Without My Sister – ARC Book Review

Not Without My Sister: A compelling and heartbreaking WW2 historical novel by [Marion Kummerow]

1944, Germany. Two sisters seek to overcome impossible odds to be reunited, in this utterly devastating and unforgettable novel about sisterhood, courage and survival.

All they had left was each other. Until the Nazis tore them apart.

After years of hiding from the Nazis, Rachel Epstein and her little sister Mindel are captured by the Gestapo and sent to the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. The only ray of light for either girl is that they are together.

But on arrival they are separated. As she’s seventeen and deemed an adult, Rachel is sent to work in a brutal factory whilst four-year-old Mindel is sent into the so-called “star” camp for Jewish prisoners. All on her own, Rachel knows her sister will have no chance of survival—unless she can find someone to take care of her.

Working in the windowless, airless factory—filling munitions casings with chemicals that burn her fingers and make her eyes sting—the only thing that keeps Rachel going is the thought of her little sister. Because if there’s even a chance Mindel is alive, Rachel knows she must try to save her.

But, separated by barbed wire, and treated brutally by SS guards who do not even see them as human beings, can either of the orphaned sisters ever dare to hope that they’ll find their way back to each other? And to freedom?

A completely heartbreaking, utterly gripping tale of courage, loss and overcoming impossible odds, perfect for fans of The Tattooist of AuschwitzThe Ragged Edge of Night and The Orphan’s Tale.

Any book related to Holocaust or WWII I would most certainly jump at the opportunity to read that book. And this is such book. Though the characters are fictional, the events that happened in this book is real.

It’s 1944, in a small village in Bavaria, Germany, Rachel Epstein and her family are living in a farmhouse, thanks to Old Hans, hiding away from the Nazis. They were Jews. But when Old Hans died, the family were separated–Rachel never saw her brothers, her parents were taken away and she and her sister, Mindel were taken to Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp, where the two sisters were separated. Rachel would do anything, including working excruciating hours at the ammunition factory or working in salt mines to be reunited with her younger sister Mindel. Mindel too wants to be reunited with her sisters and she was taken care in the children concentration camp, looked after by a kind couple.

The story is so emotional, heartbreaking and at times, you couldn’t really fathom the fact that these atrocities and brutality did happen in real life. And at time, though the characters are fictional, one couldn’t help but notice how courageous and brave Rachel really was. I couldn’t even put this book down and I got so engrossed into the book that I didn’t even realize until I came to the end! The writing was really good and the author did a good job drawing the reader to the story.

Grab your tissues because this book will make you cry. An emotional, heartbreaking story that will make you want to read this book and unputdownable historical fiction! Worth five stars!

Shadow Box – Book Review

Hey all! I know it has been a while since I posted on the blog but I was super busy with online exams for piano that I couldn’t read the books for a while! I just however finished Shadow Box by Luanne Rice so here’s my review!

The Shadow Box by [Luanne Rice]

The Amazon Charts bestselling author of Last Day delivers a haunting thriller about how far one wife is willing to go to expose the truth—and the lengths someone will go to stop her.

After artist Claire Beaudry Chase is attacked and left for dead in her home on the Connecticut coast, she doesn’t know who she can trust. But her well-connected husband, Griffin—who is running for governor—is her prime suspect.

Just before the attack, Claire was preparing for an exhibit of her shadow boxes, one of which clearly accuses Griffin of a violent crime committed twenty-five years ago. If the public were to find out who her husband is, his political career would be over. Claire’s certain her husband and his powerful supporters would kill her to stop the truth from getting out.

When one of Claire’s acquaintances is murdered, the authorities suspect the homicide is linked to the attack on Claire. As the dual investigations unfold, Claire must decide how much she’s willing to lose to take down her husband and the corrupt group of elites who will do anything to protect Griffin’s interests and their own.

No. of pages:- 367 pages

Genre:- Thriller

Claire Beaudry Chase was attacked by a masked man while she was on her way to her art exhibition. She then goes hiding and she believes that her husband, Griffin, a high prolific prosecutor and running for the governor is responsible for attacking her and also for the death of a girl named Ellen, happened twenty five years ago. Meanwhile, a ship was attacked and a woman named Sallie, who is the interior designer in that area, was dead. Are the two cases connected?

This was a sort of thriller that will put you at the edge of the seat. A land of elite and corrupted people who would do anything to remain in power and would get rid of the person who is a threat. This story is more like a cat and mouse chase, twists and turns and quite a page turner that you wouldn’t actually want to put the book down!

Overall, this book worth five stars!

No. of pages:- 336 pages

Date published:- December 10th 2019

Genre:- Psychological Thriller

After reading favorable reviews coming from this book written by a debut author, I decided I would give this book a try. A series of young beautiful models are brutally murdered with their faces disfigured. NYPD detective, Sharon Davis is set to find this notorious serial killer who has been killing these girls for the past three years.

I do really like the plot line–the unusual thing about this book is you already know who the serial killer is by the beginning of this book and you are waiting for Sharon Davis to catch this killer. So this cat and mouse game between the killer and Sharon was really good, intriguing and dramatic! But despite the good plot line with many unexpected twists and turns, and an ending that left you breathless and unbelievable. I also like the feminist view in this book, which I actually find very rare in most of the books. However, there are certain things that actually did ruin this plot. For example, the love story between Gloria and Andy to me was a bit unnecessary in the book–should have made it shorter, the confrontation between Sharon and the killer seemed unrealistic so is another part where Sharon was shot and next day she flies off to New Zealand, and I feel the author needs to do more research about police work. In a case like hunting a prolific serial killer, even the prestigious NYPD would usually hire FBI if this killing had taken place for three years. So except for this negative things, this book was a good thriller book.

Worth four stars!

Thank you Netgalley and Avon for giving me a chance to review this book! This review is based on my honest opinion.

The title itself sounds…fascinating. The Serial Killer’s Wife and it seems to have a ring in it. And the plot also sounds interesting. Beth and Tom Hardcastle seemed to be living a happy life with their daughter Poppy until the police come and knock on their door one day and takes Tom for questioning. And it was questioning about the disappearance/murder of a woman named Katie, who was Tom’s ex girlfriend, eight years ago.

The story is told from Beth’s Tom’s and Katie’s point of view so it is interesting to see what really goes in their head. Though the book is fast paced, chilling and as a reader you question if Tom is really innocent or not, this book did not have much twists and turns but nonetheless the reader (that’s me) became engrossed into the story–the writer did a good job drawing the reader to the story! The emotions and feelings that Beth faced when her husband was arrested for the murder seemed realistic but at the same time you question if those feelings Beth had towards Tom was realistic or if she was hiding something. The ending of the story was a bit unexpected.

Overall, this was really good! I couldn’t really put the book down and so I enjoyed reading this thriller and definitely read in one go! Worth five stars in my opinion.
