The German Girl – Book Review

The German Girl: A heart-wrenching and unforgettable World War 2 historical novel by [Lily Graham]

Our parents were taken. And if we go home, the Nazis will take us too…’

Hamburg 1938. Fifteen-year-old Asta is hurrying home from school with her twin brother Jurgen. The mood in the city is tense – synagogues have been smashed with sledgehammers, and Asta is too frightened to laugh as she used to.

But when she and Jurgen are stopped in the street by a friend, her world implodes further. Her Jewish parents have been dragged into the streets by German soldiers and if she and Jurgen return to their house, they will be taken too.

Heartbroken at the loss of her parents, Asta knows they must flee. With her beloved brother, she must make the perilous journey across Germany and into Denmark to reach their only surviving relative, her aunt Trine, a woman they barely know.

Jammed into a truck with other refugees, Asta prays for a miracle to save herself and Jurgen. Crossing the border is a crime punishable by death, and what she and Jurgen must embark on a dangerous crossing on foot, through the snowy forest dividing Germany and Denmark. And when barking dogs and armed soldiers find Jurgen and Asta escapes, she must hold on to hope no matter what. One day she will find her twin, the other half of herself. Whatever the price she has to pay…

A gripping and poignant read that will break your heart and give you hope. Fans of Fiona Valpy, Kristin Hannah and Catherine Hokin will be gripped by the story of a brave brother and sister seeking safety during one of the darkest times in our history.

Thank You Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC! This book is based on my honest opinion.

I am a Holocaust fiction fan and so I was really grateful and privileged to read this book. In a nutshell, the story is divided between the present day set in 1990’s in Sweden and the past, setting back to 1938, Hamburg, Germany. In present day Sweden, Ingrid is helping out her grandfather, who is suffering from the early stages of dementia, who hated German language and who insisted that Ingrid reminds him of Asta. Then Ingrid later on finds out that her grandfather was actually a German Jew, who lived in Hamburg, Germany with his twin sister Asta and their parents.

Now in the past, Asta and Jurgen are carefree children who played pranks for fun. When Hitler came to power in 1933, things start changing for both Asta and Jurgen as they faced discrimination due to the fact that they are Jews. Things start heating up with Kristallnacht and their parents taken to Dachau Concentration Camp, the twins with the help of a person they have been playing prank on escape Germany and begins the arduous journey from Germany to Denmark through a forest range, along with other Jews. But towards the border, the Jews get caught and Asta manages to escape and enter into Denmark with the help of a man named Kalle.

This book, just like any Holocaust books I have read is very emotional. The story talks about the courage and bravery the twins faced together, during the ruthless rule of the Nazis in Germany and how they overcame it together, without having to go to a concentration camp. The author has done a tremendous research on Holocaust and kudos to the author for writing such a good book! (this is the first book I have read from this author). I like the sibling relationship between Asta and Jurgen. The ending was shocking and very sad that I was teary at the end. I simply couldn’t put this book town, and I felt I was drawn back to that time.

Overall, this book is an emotional and gripping book, that is unputdownable. Worth five stars!

This book will be released on 12th January 2021 so you can pre-order your copy now on Amazon!

She may be used to dealing with messy divorces, but this one will be her most difficult case yet. Olivia’s husband has already betrayed her—but would he set her up for murder?

A gripping and unputdownable thriller for fans of Gillian McAllister, Alafair Burke and A Killer’s Wife.

Thank You Netgalley and the publisher for this book!

Olivia Sinclair receives a video showing her husband Richard cheating with a secretary named Sandy. Then Sandy was found brutally murdered and the police arrest Olivia as the room in which Sandy’s body was found was paid with Olivia’s card and there was an email sent through Olivia’s email, threatening Sandy. But Olivia denies that and is convinced that someone–is framing her for Sandy’s murder and enlists the help of private investigator, Brian.

I really enjoyed reading this book! This was a fast paced thriller with unexpected turns and twists that will leave your heart reeling!!!! I liked the plot, the thrill of the story and as a reader, wonder who is the main perpetrator who want to destroy Olivia and we have so many viable suspects–Richard, or David her son-in-law or entirely someone else? I think the author did a good job engaging the reader into the story. I also like the ending!

This is the first book of the Olivia Sinclair series so I am looking forward to read more from the series–worth five stars!

The Giver of Stars – Lazy Book Review

“LAZY BOOK Review” means I will not be doing the full detailed reviews like I do with the ARCS and other books. The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes is a New York Times Bestseller and one of her best books she has written after Me Before You (I am sure you all would have read it). So here we go!

The Giver of Stars: Fall in love with the enchanting 2020 Sunday Times bestseller from the author of Me Before You by [Jojo Moyes]

Discover this pocket of joy perfect for anyone who loves uplifting and heart-warming stories

THE GREATEST LOVE STORY IS THE ONE YOU LEAST EXPECT . . .

Alice Wright doesn’t love her new American husband.

Nor her domineering father-in-law or the judgmental townsfolk of Baileyville, Kentucky.

Stifled and misunderstood, she yearns for escape and finds it in defiant Margery O’Hare and the sisterhood bringing books to the isolated and vulnerable.

But when her father-in-law and the town turn against them, Alice fears the freedom, friendship and the new love she’s found will be lost . . .

LOSE YOURSELF IN THE SPELLBINDING STORY OF LOVE, COMMUNITY AND THE POWER OF READING: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER & REESE WITHERSPOON BOOK CLUB PICK FROM THE AUTHOR OF ME BEFORE YOU

I really enjoyed reading this book. A heartwarming love story and friendship that will make you cry and keep you awake. Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve and moves to a small impoverished town, Baileyville, Kentucky in 1930’s. But Alice felt distant with her husband and doesn’t get along with her father in law. She then starts joining the library group, consisting of Margery O’Hare, whose family are known notorious and is having a relationship with a minder, Sven Gustavson, Sophia, the only “Colored” woman in the group , Beth, Isabel and Kathleen. The story talks about the ups and downs, faced by these women in a men dominated society, were women are supposed to be looking after the children and tend their husbands, and how Alice’s father-in-law manages to turn the small town against the ladies. This also talks about the friendship bond between Alice and Margery and the small budding romantic relationship between Alice and Fred.

Jojo Moyes has done tremendous research about the history of America, particularly about the library part. I applaud the fact that she made the story as realistic as possible without altering the history. The book was somewhat emotional, well written and the author did a good job drawing the reader into the story, as if you are the part of the women’s circle. The book worth five stars!

Circle of Doubt – Book Review

Circle of Doubt by [Tracy Buchanan]

She thought she was the perfect mother—until the new neighbours moved in.

Emma and Dele’s dreams came true nine years ago when they adopted their daughter, Isla. It felt like fate, like they were meant to find each other, and now they’re living the life they always wanted. But then one day a new family moves into Forest Grove—and Emma can’t shake the chilling feeling that the wife looks just like Isla’s birth mother.

Emma tells herself that this sophisticated stranger can’t possibly be the troubled woman she remembers from the adoption. But as they get to know each other and it becomes clear that Tatjana has a special interest in Isla, her suspicions grow.

When small things start to go wrong and her parenting abilities are brought into question, Emma feels undermined, turning to her sister Harriet for support. But things only spiral further when secrets from her past suddenly resurface.

With rumours swirling, Emma begins to doubt herself. Could Tatjana be Isla’s birth mother? And, with everything that’s happening, is Emma the right person to be raising her daughter at all?

No. of pages:- 299 pages

Genre:- thriller

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher and author for providing me the ARC. This review is based on my honest opinion only.

Emma and her husband Dele moved to the Forest Grove with their adopted daughter, Isla. Emma is white and Dele is Black and they experienced a sort of racism when they moved into their house, starting with someone smashing their house window.. Then another rich family, Tatjana and Lawrence move into Forest Grove as well and Emma couldn’t help but notice how similar Tatjana looks to Isla’s biological mother, Jade. Then someone starts spreading vicious rumor about Emma and the whole mother’s club turn against Emma–and one of them who seems to be Isla’s biological parents would do anything to get Isla back by destroying Emma.

At first, the story sounded interesting. The writing was good and engaging. However, this was not a fast paced thriller as you would expect and also a bit predictable as who this mysterious person, who is targeting Emma could be. The ending was good though nothing new about the ending.

Overall, it was an OK thriller–worth four stars!

Little One – Book Review

Little One by [Sarah A. Denzil]

“Take my hand, little one.”

Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. She says she’s waiting for Father, and that strikes Fran as particularly odd.

After Esther is reunited with her family, Fran can’t stop thinking about this pious child whose imaginary friend is God. Fran’s instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

Fran’s husband warns her not to get too close, but one morning, Esther and her family disappear. Where did they go? Why did they leave their furniture behind?

Fran knows in her gut that something terrible is going to happen to that child, and she can’t stand by while it happens. No matter the cost.

After all, she found her. But can she save her?

No. of pages:- 359 pages

Date published:- will be published on 14th January 2021

Genre:- Psychological Thriller

Thank You Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book! This review is based on my opinion.

Fran while jogging comes across a little girl who seemed to be lost. Her mother later on finds her and then introduces herself as Mary Whittaker and the girl as Esther and they both have moved from Tucson, Arizona to the small town of Leacroft. Fran, who lost her child then suddenly becomes a bit protective towards Esther, realizing that the new American family are very religious and Fran suspects something abuse is going on in the house. Esther goes missing again and then after being found, the family pack their belongings and leave the village. Fran is determined to find what happened to the family even if it means going to Arizona…

The story started out pretty good. The story started a bit slow then it got more and more interesting by the middle of the book after the Whittaker family left. However, the story sort of become a bit unrealistic to me towards the end. The writing was good and the author did a good job keeping the reader into the story. Towards the end, you get some unexpected twists and turns.

Overall, it is not a bad book–an OK thriller. Worth three stars!

Lock Every Door – Book Review

Lock Every Door by [Riley Sager]

They’ve offered you a luxury apartment, rent free. THE CATCH: you may not live long enough to enjoy it…

No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents.
These are the only rules for Jules Larson’s new job as apartment sitter for an elusive resident of the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile private buildings and home to the rich and famous.

Recently heartbroken and practically homeless, Jules readily accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.

Out of place among the extremely wealthy, Jules finds herself pulled toward other apartment sitter Ingrid. But Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her. Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story – but the next day, her new friend has vanished.
And then Jules discovers that Ingrid is not the first temporary resident to go missing…

Welcome to the Bartholomew…You may never leave.

From the New York Times bestselling author of FINAL GIRLS and LAST TIME I LIED: ‘the author delivers the kind of unpredictable conclusion that all thriller readers crave – utterly shocking yet craftily foreshadowed…’ New York Times Book Review

No. of pages:- 359 pages

Date published:- July 25th 2019

Genre:- Psychological Thriller/ Horror

This book is one of the books I have wanted to read for a long time and finally I got the book! The plot line sounded intriguing and interesting to me.

Jules Larsen lost her job, got cheated by her boyfriend and literally unemployed, penniless and is on the verge of being homeless. When she got the job as an apartment sitter for one of the historic and privileged apartments in Manhattan, Bartholomew, she was excited–she will get paid just to look after the apartment for three months with a total whopping amount of $12,000. Too good to be true right? But there are conditions. No visitors are allowed. Have to spend the nights in the apartment and no disturbing the other residents living in the building. Because of her situation, Jules accepts the situation and moves into the apartment 12A.

Then she meets another apartment sitter, Ingrid Gallagher and becomes friends with her. However, Ingrid tells Jules that Bartholomew, despite the grand looks on outside, inside, it has many dark secrets that scares Ingrid. And then one night, Ingrid goes missing.

Jules starts searching for her friend Ingrid and then she finds that Bartholomew indeed has some dark secrets and Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter who went missing…

The story was really good that it had me in suspense! You can completely relate to the main protagonist Jules in the story–I mean when you are basically unemployed and penniless, you would not miss this opportunity right? I mean realistically, I wouldn’t. The middle part of the story for more intense and I felt like I was watching some kind of horror movie while reading the book (in other words, the author did a good job with that) There were twists and turns in each chapter and the ending left you shocking and unexpected that I am still thinking about that dramatic ending! If you want to read a good horror book, then this book will be perfect.

Overall, I give this book as five stars! Unputdownable with twists and turns, and you certainly would think twice when getting a job as an apartment sitter after reading the book!

Single Mother- Book Review

Single Mother: An absolutely unputdownable psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist by [Samantha Hayes]

I will do anything to protect my daughter. She’s all I’ve ever wanted and all I really have, but the moment I opened that letter and accepted the inheritance, I walked us right into a dangerous trap.

I know I should have got her to tell me who she’s been talking to on the phone late at night, and where she was the day I went to pick her up from school and couldn’t find her, but she’s not spoken a word since she found that little pile of bones buried in the garden.

And now she’s missing…

A jaw-dropping, addictive and totally twisty psychological thriller that will have you sleeping with the light on! Perfect for anyone who loved The Girl on the TrainFriend Request or The Wife Between Us.

No. of pages:- 357 pages

Date published:- will be published on January 5th 2021

Genre:- Psychological thriller

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC This review is based on my honest opinion.

Mel Douglas seems to be having a struggling life–her ex is in jail, and she was being fired from her job as a caretaker after someone accuses her of stealing money from a patient. Then Mel gets an unexpected letter, claiming that she was the heir of an inn and that she will inherit the inn. Mel along with her daughter, Kate moves away from Birmingham and moves to the countryside. However, while she undertakes the preparations for the inn, someone doesn’t want Mel to take over the inn. Skeletal remains were found by the back yard of the inn and Kate goes missing afterwards…

This book for me started a bit slow and was a bit boring but soon, the climax began to build towards the end of the book, with Mel’s daughter disappearing. The characters were OK and the writing was good though the “thrill” and the way they described this book as similar to The Girl on the Train didn’t do justice. Overall, to me, it was an OK thriller, not a type of thriller that you would want to die for.

Overall, I will rate this book as three stars!

Christmas Book Currently Readin!

Hey all! I decided I will share the list of Christmas books I am currently reading and hoping to finish!

  1. Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Cafe – Jessica Redland
Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Cafe

A few minutes of courage might change your life…

Emotionally, Tara Porter finds the festive period a challenge. Christmas Day is a reminder of the family she lost, and New Year’s Eve holds bitter memories of the biggest mistake of her life: marrying Garth Tewkesbury. Shunning invitations to celebrate, she seeks refuge in her flat with only her giant house bunny, Hercules, for company.

Professionally, though, it’s the best time of year. Tara’s thriving café, The Chocolate Pot, is always packed. With the café hosting a wedding and engagement party, it’s shaping up to be the café’s best Christmas ever.

When former nemesis, Jed Ferguson, threatens the future of The Chocolate Pot, Tara prepares for a fight. The café is everything to her and she’s not going to let anyone or anything jeopardise that.

Tara badly misjudged ex-husband Garth and, since then, has refused to let anyone in. After all, if you don’t let them in, they can’t hurt you. But has she misjudged Jed too? Is it possible that he’s not the arrogant, deceitful man from whom she bought the café 14 years earlier? Can she find the courage to find out for sure?

2. Christmas at Carly’s Cupcakes – Jessica Redland

Christmas at Carly's Cupcakes

Christmas at Carly’s Cupcakes is a cosy heartwarming tale of friendship, family, putting the past behind, and embracing the future.

It’s Christmas in Whitsborough Bay. With fairy lights connecting the shops and cafés on either side of the cobbles, Castle Street seems magical. And in such a magical place, surely Christmas wishes can come true.

Carly Travis, owner of Carly’s Cupcakes, has two Christmas wishes this year. Her first is for her younger sister, Bethany, to focus on the positives in her life, including her Christmas wedding, instead of writing herself off as a failure. Bethany’s attempts at cake-decorating aren’t going to win any awards, but she’s certainly great with customers. Carly’s second wish is for her best friend, Liam, to come home for Christmas.

When Liam calls to say he’s been granted leave from the army, Carly makes a third Christmas wish. It’s the one she’s made every year since she was a teenager and, if she’s really brave, could this be the year when it finally comes true?

With Liam coming home, the shop having its best year yet, and a wedding to look forward to, it’s shaping up to be the best Christmas ever for Carly. But for Bethany, things are starting to unravel …

3. The Parisian Bake Off – Jenny Oliver

The Parisian Christmas Bake Off

Welcome to the most celebrated patisserie competition in Paris – ready, steady, bake!
Watching snowflakes settle on the Eiffel Tower, Rachel Smithson’s cosy English village feels very far way – as, thankfully, does her commitment-phobic ex, probably already kissing someone else under the mistletoe. But Rachel hasn’t come to Paris to mope she’s come to bake. Hard.

Because the search for Paris’s next patisserie apprentice is about to begin! And super-chef judge Henri Salernes is an infamously tough cookie. But Rachel isn’t about to let her confidence (or pastry) crumble. She’s got one week, mounds of melt-in-the-mouth macaroons and towers of perfect profiteroles to prove that she really is a star baker.

As well as clouds of flour, and wafts of chocolate and cinnamon, there’s definitely a touch of Christmas magic in the air… Rachel hasn’t come to Paris looking for a fairy-tale romance, but the city of love might gift-wrap her one anyway…

Not even a dusting of icing sugar could make The Parisian Christmas Bake-Off a more perfect Christmas treat!

So what are the Christmas books you are currently? Leave a comment below!
